According to Statistics Canada, amid lockdowns to combat the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, about 1,011,000 jobs were lost across the country in March, driving the unemployment rate of 5.6% in February to 7.8%. Federal reports indicate that between March 15th and 21st, an estimated 1,300,000 citizens were unable to work due to the pandemic, an additional 800,000 worked about half the hours they normally would, and about 3,100,000 people were affected by altogether by either job loss or reduced hours.
March 2020 has seen the largest loss of jobs in a single month since records began in 1976. As of now, Canada is at its lowest employment rate since April 1997. The hardest his provinces are Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec.
As of now, Canada's federal government has reported 19,759 confined cases and 461 Covid-19 related deaths.
