At Least 32 Dead in Bangladesh Ferry Crash

Bangladeshi local media reported that at least 32 people are confirmed dead while about 20 others are missing after a ferry called the Morning Bird suffered a collision with another vessel and capsized on the Burigana River near the Sadarghat river port. Coastguard spokesperson Commander Hayet Ibne Siddique said that rescue and recovery divers are still searching the area for bodies. The incident happened at about 09:30 local time, and about 50 people were on board at the time of the incident.

Witnesses told news outlets that many passengers were stuck in cabins on the vessel as it overturned, and the collision happened as the Morning Bird was attempting to moor. As of now, investigations are still ongoing, though Commodore Golam Sadeqk, the chief of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, said that the Morning Bird vessel sank "due to carelessness" and was "not overcrowded".
