4 Dead in Australian Midair Collision

Four people were killed after two twin-engine light aircraft collided midair near the Mangalore airport over the Australian state of Victoria. According to the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority, two aircraft were both travelling at about 4000 feet (1219 meters) and took off from different airport. Police say that while investigations are ongoing, it is possible that the two pilots did not see each other due to cloud cover. This incident is thought to be Australia's first mid air collision in over a decade.

Both planes carried two people each and were engaged in flight training. The first plane was a Piper PA-44-180 Seminole operated by the Moorabbin Aviation Service flight school while the second was a Beechcraft D95A Travel Air operated by the Peninsula Aero Club at Tyabb.
