What happens if you don't tip in Acryptia?

Acryptia. Taco's card game where you complete as many floors as you can against Rug'O, the card dealer, as he sends stronger and stronger monsters at you. It's a simple game to get the hang of and, especially compared to many games on the WAX blockchain, is genuinely enjoyable to play. Filled with many interesting features, I'm here to look at one in particular. Tipping.

At the end of each floor, you come face-to-face with the merchant. The merchant offers 2 services:

-Campfire: The campfire allows you to recover health at the rate of 4 health for 12 gold.

-Shop: The merchant offers cards that you can buy for gold to add to your deck, increasing your odds in-game to draw non-monster cards.

The other feature on the screen is tipping. After each floor, you are able to tip the merchant as much gold as you want (or have). But what do these tips do?

To answer this, I played 3 rounds of Acryptia to see the difference. Here's what I did differently in each round:

1. Tip 0 gold.

2. Tip 1 gold per floor.

3. Tip everything I have whenever I can.

Let's take a look at what happened.

0 Gold tipped: For the first few floors I noticed no difference, I was still able to freely heal at the campfire and the shop was all looking normal. Then I reached the 5th floor. The merchant was getting unhappy. The campfire was still available for its usual fee, but suddenly cards in the shop were costing much more than normal. Specifically, 70 gold for a level 1 card and 80 gold for a level 2 card.image.png Ignoring this, I moved onto the next floor, and before long, I was greeted with some not-so-kind words: image.png

"THE MERCHANT DOESN'T TRUST YOU"

Heartbreaking. I was now unable to heal myself at the campfire and there was no option to buy from the merchant. None at all. Thankfully, from here you are still able to tip, and eventually, you will regain his trust but I didn't reach that point.

1 Gold Tipped Per Floor: Tipping 1 gold on each floor seems like the base tipping rate and keeps prices standard as can be seen below with level 1 cards costing 40 gold and level 2 cards costing 50 gold. image.png

Tipping All Gold Whenever Possible: For reference, this ended up with an average of around 10 gold tipped per floor. After tipping 7 gold on the first floor, 15 on the second, and 10 on the third, resulting in level 1 cards costing 30 and level 2 costing 40. Visually, the shop looked like this: image.png

Personally, I don't believe over-tipping is worthwhile as a maximum 'discount' of 10 gold is pretty limited. Whenever I play I tip 1 gold per floor as this keeps stable prices while still allowing me to buy fairly often. I would strongly recommend against not tipping at all as getting an extra level 2 card like a shield in your deck makes a big difference. Losing the ability to rest and heal at the campfire is also a big loss as while it may be expensive, spending 24 gold to get from 2hp to 10hp makes a seriously big difference in making it to the next floor.

Thanks for reading and good luck in your future runs!
