The center-right European People's Party (EPP), the largest group in the European Parliament, has adopted a more aggressive approach to vital legislative proposals, causing discontent among its lawmakers and disrupting the EU's legislative process. Led by EPP President Manfred Weber, the party is opposing pro-migration policies, overregulation, and the EU's Green Deal.
The EPP's strategy aims to secure electoral gains and shape the agenda for the next mandate, but it is creating uncertainty and undermining cooperation with other political groups. Critics argue that the EPP's focus on electoral campaigning is hindering EU policymaking and disregarding facts for propaganda purposes.
The party's opposition to the Green Deal and attempts to sabotage essential laws have raised concerns about the future of EU policy. Weber's strategy is a personal political agenda to undermine Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and build alliances with right-wing parties. However, maintaining unity within the EPP may become increasingly challenging as more liberal delegations consider leaving the group to join other factions.
French President Emmanuel Macron will meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Paris to discuss European issues and Franco-Italian relations, following months of tension between the two governments. This meeting will occur during Meloni's visit to France to support Rome's bid to host the 2030 World Expo. Relations between France and Italy have been strained since Meloni became the head of the Italian government.
The first diplomatic crisis occurred in November 2022 over handling migrants rescued by the NGO SOS Méditerranée. Migration issues have continued to impact relations between the two countries. Despite these differences, Macron and Meloni share a similar stance on supporting Ukraine in the face of Russia's war. The meeting will also serve as an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming European Council and NATO summit.
The European Parliament plans to allocate a €37 million budget for its communication strategy during the 2024 EU elections. The strategy aims to create a wave of engagement by mobilizing abstainers and first-time voters through a network of media, civil society organizations, and individuals. Approximately €8 million will fund media companies to promote the EU elections and the Parliament's work. In comparison, €3.9 million will support civil society organizations and change-makers to encourage non-partisan civic engagement.
The Parliament will leverage it together.eu platform and stakeholder network, including correspondents and liaison offices across member states, to communicate its work and the importance of European elections. The Parliament expects increased voter turnout due to the EU's prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, NextGeneration funds, and its response to Russia's war in Ukraine.
Despite recent challenges such as the Qatargate scandal and harassment cases, the Parliament aims to address these issues seriously through internal reforms and build public confidence in the upcoming elections.
