The European Commission has faced criticism from Germany and Spain for extending restrictions on the import of certain Ukrainian agricultural products. The restrictions, which affect wheat, maize, rapeseed, and sunflower seed, were implemented by several EU countries to protect their domestic farmers.
However, with some EU countries experiencing crop failures due to drought, there are concerns about the impact of these restrictions. German Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir strongly criticized the decision, emphasizing the importance of solidarity with Ukraine and avoiding actions that benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Similarly, Spain's Vice President and Minister of Economy Nadia Calviño highlighted the potential for Ukrainian imports to help address cereal shortages caused by drought. The extension of the restrictions, despite Hungary not meeting the EU executive's conditions, has raised further questions. Some EU officials, including EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski, have suggested exploring options for allowing grain exports from Ukraine to address the demand within the EU.
