Brexit news has been relatively quiet this week, with the focus shifting to Rishi Sunak's ambition for the UK to lead international regulation in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Prime Minister Sunak sought US support for this during his visit to meet President Biden and proposed hosting a global AI summit in London this autumn. While this ambition is not a direct benefit of Brexit, it is part of the UK's attempt to define its global role post-Brexit.
The UK has a strong research base in AI, and the idea of becoming an AI regulatory center is more realistic than previous proposals for the UK to establish regulatory regimes in various areas. However, the UK's credibility in leading global AI regulation is undermined by its Brexit-related reputation for political instability and its previous willingness to break international law. Furthermore, Brexit has reduced the UK's influence with the EU and the US, making it challenging to broker deals or lead global regulation.
The UK's operational capacity to undertake large projects like AI regulation is also in question, considering the delays and problems with implementing import controls on goods from the EU. Labour's Brexit policy could have provided an advantage in pitching the UK to lead AI regulation, as Brexit Ultras' deregulatory approach would not taint a Labour government. However, restoring the UK's international reputation would take time, and rejoining the EU remains a distant prospect.
