The Forbidden Planet was a film released by M.G.M. to American audiences in 1956 with rave reviews. Apart from the 1951 release of The Day the Earth Stood Still, few other films of the 50s and 60s were more impactful in establishing the science fiction tropes of interstellar space travel, futuristic robotics, and otherworldly soundtracks. Such features would later cement themselves in the psyche of movie-goers and act as jumping-points for later successes such as Star Wars and Star Trek.

Thought the artist for the film's theatrical release poster art is currently unknown, production was relatively limited compared to the film's success due to the false impression made by the public that the robot character prominently featured on the poster, Robby the Robot, was the antagonist of the film. In contrast, Robby was a supporting character in this film, whose presence is sometimes cited as one of the first cinematic depictions of a robotic character possessing definitive personality traits and motives. The character of Robby the Robot was so popular that he would go on to feature in over 20 more films and tv shows over the following decades.

Over the years, The Forbidden Planet has gone on to inspire elements of works ranging from Fallout New Vegas, to Star Trek, to Doctor Who.

This is my recreation of the the theatrical release poster art.
