Here's a dirty confession: I am not 100% sure how to pronounce "gwei". I'm not losing any sleep over it but every once in a while I find myself wondering. Some time ago we published an article explaining Ethereum gas fees and the the question popped into my head again. It's not a debacle as big as the gif one but I figured I'd look into it nonetheless.
Apparently, I'm not the only one wondering - I found this Reddit thread on the same topic. A redditor suggested“gway [gweɪ]” is an acceptable pronunciation. That's the one that sounds most natural to me - after all, gwei is supposed to be short for gigawei (1,000,000,000 wei, the smallest unit of ETH), so if we follow basic linguistics logic, "gway" sounds right.
HowToPronounce suggests that we could be saying "gweh" [gwɛ:], which also seems reasonable.
I also watched a few YouTube videos that mention gwei (like this one for example), and it seems that most people stick to "gway". I think I'm going do the same.
Other things I don't know how to pronounce
ETH
While there is no question about how to say Ethereum correctly (just listen to how Vitalik says it - after all, he's the one who created it), the actual currency is a bit of a head scratch.
Do you spell it out [iː tiː 'eɪtʃ]? Do you just say "ether" [ˈiːθɚ], or just go with [eθ]? I've heard all three, and usually go with "ee-ther". What do you think?
CeFi
While things are clear with DeFi ("dee-fai" ['diːfaɪ]), it is my natural instict to pronounce its lesser counterpart as "see-fai" ['siːfaɪ]. I do that mostly because they rhyme but if you think of how you voice "decentralized" and "centralized", there's a major difference in the pronunciation. This in mind, the correct way to say it should be "se-fai" [ˈsefaɪ].
Dapp
This one I don't even know how to spell, let alone pronounce. Is it "dApp", "dapp" or "Dapp"? Why are there so may options?
The pronounciation options I've encountered are these ones:
- "Dap" [dæp], and
- "Dee-app" ['diːˈæp]
Which one do you prefer?
Jungkook
Yeah, yeah, yeah, not a crypto thing, bla-bla. I'm just fascinated with the pronunciation of this guy's name so I'll throw it in the mix.
I went straight to YouTube for this one, and the first video I found seemed pretty credible. According to it, Jungkook sounds like "Ton-dzon-guk". Here, the "Ton" part should be the surname, so the final answer is "Dzon-guk".
Sounds legit, right? WRONG! Because then I came across this:
And now I know its something like "Jon-coke" or "Jon-goke" or something like that.
You can now move on with your day feeling satisfied you learned something. You're welcome.
