Today as I was working in old house in St. Louis, some rolled up newspaper fell out of the wall.
That in and of itself is not unusual. I've found papers in the walls of several houses. Some people used it for insulation. It wasn't the greatest but it was better than nothing.
I couldn't find a date on the paper. It was falling apart and I just happened to see this story. Part of the paper's name was Democrat and it cost 3 cents.
I showed this to a guy from STL and he had no idea who Dizzy Dean was. Neither did my wife.
I knew that he was a baseball pitcher back in the 30s, but that was about it.
Here's a little run down:
Jay Hanna "Dizzy" Dean
b. Jan 16, 1910
d. Jul 17, 1974
Played for
STL Cardinals 1930, 1932-37
Chicago Cubs 1938-41
STL Browns 1947
A brash and colorful personality, Dean is the last National League (NL) pitcher to win 30 games in one season (1934).[6] After his playing career, “Ol’ Diz” became a popular television sports commentator. Dean was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953.[7] When the Cardinals reopened the team Hall of Fame in 2014, he was inducted in the inaugural class. Src
While this find was not world-changing nor even fascinating, I did find it to be an interesting diversion from an otherwise tedious day.
