Yesterday
I picked the wrong one of two and the 11yo Togoville won under a good ride from Conor McGovern at a handsome 10/1. The selection Caesar's Comet drifted in the market, got bounced about early and ultimately seemed to get a poor ride. He'll be of interest in future races, as will Motbeq who showed a lot of early speed.
Today's Race
You wouldn't know it was a Saturday from the dismal programme of racing on offer today. I'm (not literally) heading to Wolverhampton for a 1m4f class 5 handicap pretty late in the day.
Today's Contenders
Monsaraz is quite a strong favourite. Two solid efforts since joining the David Loughnane yard. Up in trip. The Newcastle run was a good performance but he was a strong favourite there too and yet failed to make the places. Looks worth taking on.
Greengage has 5 wins from 17 AW starts. Only beaten a head over CD when last here and an easy winner at Newcastle last time out. Trainer and jockey are both in good form. Despite having Choisir as her sire the 6yo mare has no problems staying 1m4f.
By Jove is a 4yo by Nathaniel. Previously with Michael Bell and now with Mike Appleby he hasn't been over-raced. Scored over CD with Tom Marquand up last month. Ran well at Lingfield too; the Kempton effort last time a little weaker. The win at Wolverhampton was his sole start on Tapeta so he's a contender. David Probert takes the ride today.
By Jove has held both Dream Magic and Liva on recent starts. Percy Prosecco has ability but has been out of form recently. Riverfront is interesting for Andrew Balding. Last on his two outings (but not beaten too far and in class 4 races) since returning from a 477 days break, he's seen a good deal of market support overnight.
Greengage is up 6lbs for the easy win at Newcastle last time but her recent form has been strong enough to make her the pick. Ideally I think she'd prefer a strong pace to come off which she won't necessarily get but at 6/1 she is worth playing for the win here.
