Social media is a great place to connect, meet people, build network and communities but the web2 based social media platforms have not been friend with the way most web3 grinders operate.

Web3 based social media are microblogging platforms hosted on decentralized servers as alternative to traditional social media. Most web3 based socials uses cryptography or blockchain technology to give users more control over their data. They are built to be permissionless and community governed.

There have been several attempts by platforms to onboard people directly from Twitter into platforms like starsarena, debox, tipchat but most of these platforms end up hitting a dead end.

But there are still platforms out there that have stood the test of time, though are less heard of till date, some of them are:

Mastodon: A federated microblogging platform created in 2016 by Eugen Rochko. The platform allows users to join different servers (called instances) based on their interests and preferences. Users can also create their own instances and set their own rules. Mastodon uses a protocol called ActivityPub to enable interoperability between different instances and other web3 social platforms.

Odysee: The YouTube for web3 nerds is a video-sharing platform that uses the LBRY protocol to store and distribute content on a peer-to-peer network. Users can earn and spend LBRY Credits (LBC), a cryptocurrency, to support creators and access premium content. Odysee also features a decentralized identity system and a content discovery algorithm that is influenced by user feedback. Odysee was acquired in 2015 by Google LLC. Odysee currently host about 5.3 million monthly users presently.

Nostr: A minimalist social protocol that allows users to publish and subscribe to messages from various sources, such as Bitcoin transactions, IPFS files, or RSS feeds. Users can also filter, rank, and moderate messages using their own criteria.

Nostr operates as an open protocol using “relays” for sending and receiving text messages.

 Nostr aims to be a low-level protocol that can support various social applications.

Mirror: A publishing platform that uses Ethereum smart contracts to enable writers and readers to collaborate and create value.

Mirror is a web3 publishing platform similar to Medium, but relying on blockchain based encryption.

Users can create, own, and monetize their content using cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Mirror also supports features such as crowdfunding, auctions, and DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations)

Some of these platforms as we can see can serve as a better alternative to most traditional media we currently use but their lack of adoption can be attributed to some things below;

Complexity: due to the decentralized nature, some of these platforms have very cracky UI and navigating them is as though one is navigating troubled waters

Publicity: most of these platforms have poor marketing and publicity hence they haven't seen limelight.

Followership: most top OG's in the crypto space won't want to start growing their followership afresh on a new platform so they just tend to stick with the popular ones and keep these web3 based platforms under the radar.
