Luana Pinheiro has chosen to receive her pay in Bitcoin, and in doing so becomes the first ever sportswoman in Latin America to get paid in Bitcoin. Is it just a publicity stunt or does she have valid reasons?

Bitwage is a company that specializes in HR and Payroll services. This means they make sure you pay tax and get paid what you are owed. And in this case, as with many other athletes, pay them in Bitcoin.

It sounds a little bit of a ploy or a PR stunt to me. But let us see what Luana says about why she has chosen this method.

Luana and the why

She says that the volatility of Bitcoin does not concern her. And that without volatility it would not go up either. Wich is technically correct I guess. Let us see what other reasons she has.

Think about it: it takes an average of 10–15 years for an individual to obtain a black belt in Brazil in Jiu Jitsu, so my time preference here is just as long, if not longer. Everything else is just noise to me and the lower the price, the more Bitcoin I can secure for the future. -Luana Pinheiro

She is it for the long run judging by this comment. And that is also a factor that makes the volatility matter less. As volatility is typically something day traders care more about than HODLers.

She also says that while she gets paid in Fiat from her sponsors, she converts it to Bitcoin as well. And she also says that she uses Bitcoin as a way to protect against inflation. As a Brazilian, she knows a thing or two about inflation. Even if she only was born in 1994. I would say that basically, all who live in South America have to face and battle inflation on a completely another level than the one we normally see in the west.

My two cents

I have to say that I was positively surprised by her reasons and grasp of fundamentals. While someone who is as dedicated as a top-level fighter or athlete has to be, it is easy to ignore and skip these things. But it looks like she has a black belt in other things and not only Jiu Jitsu. So it looks like I have a new favorite UFC fighter to root for. =)

So while it initially may look like a PR stunt, I would say it is in fact much more than that. And I wish her all the success, both in the octagon and in crypto.
