"I was tired. I knew I was tired. My eyes were burning, my brain was foggy, and I had to wake up early.
But I kept scrolling. One more post. One more video. One more meme.
I couldn‘t stop. And I know I‘m not alone.
So why do we do it?"

The Infinite Scroll Is Designed to Trap You
There‘s no end to the feed. No page numbers. No 'you‘re done' message.
This is intentional. Social media platforms designed infinite scroll to keep us engaged. The longer we scroll, the more ads we see, and the more money they make.
We‘re not weak. We‘re playing a game we can‘t win.
Dopamine Doesn‘t Care About Tiredness
Every time we see a new post, our brain releases a tiny amount of dopamine. It‘s the same chemical that makes gambling addictive.
Our brain doesn‘t care if we‘re tired. It just wants the next hit. And the next. And the next.
The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)
'What if something important happens while I‘m asleep?'
That‘s the irrational thought that keeps us scrolling. We‘re afraid to miss out on something, even if that something is just another cat video.
Deep down, we know nothing important is happening. But our brain doesn‘t believe us.

Our Brains Are Wired to Seek Novelty
Humans are curious animals. We‘re wired to seek new information, new experiences, new content.
The feed provides endless novelty. Every swipe brings something new. And that‘s addictive.
There‘s No Natural Stopping Point
When you watch a movie, it ends. When you read a book, you finish a chapter.
But the feed never ends. There‘s no natural place to stop. So we keep going until we physically can‘t anymore.
What Helps Me Stop
I‘ve tried a few things that actually work:
- Setting a timer (20 minutes max)
- Keeping my phone out of the bedroom
- Turning off notifications
- Replacing scrolling with reading
It‘s not easy. But it‘s possible.

It‘s Not Your Fault
Social media companies spend millions designing algorithms to keep you hooked. They hire psychologists. They study your behaviour.
You‘re not weak. You‘re up against a system designed to keep you scrolling.
"The feed never ends. But your time does.
Every hour you spend scrolling is an hour you don‘t get back. And that‘s the real cost."
What About You?
"Do you scroll before bed? Have you tried to stop?
Let me know in the comments — I‘d love to hear your experience."
"If this article made you think, leave a tip or a like — it keeps me writing honest content."
