Ah... like all good construction and renovation projects, I've already started to run overtime... but thankfully, not over-budget (yet...). And likely for the exact same reason... I forgot that I had to teach this morning, and so instead of doing the things that I had planned for the morning (priming and sanding...), I had to teach the violin instead. So... I'm pretty sure that that is the same thing that causes large infrastructure projects to run behind schedule.
Thankfully, I have several days of clear summer weather before the weekend hits with Christmas and some rain.
So, before the students arrived, I had time to quickly go around the patio tops and remove all the metal staples that were likely holding down some shade cloth, something that I will want to add in soon enough. Easy enough to do with a flathead screwdriver, as most of these staples were already sticking out a bit.
Later in the afternoon (probably right after I finish writing this...), I will start to stripping and sanding the tops... I think that there are a few more cracks that I will need to fill in, but on the whole, it is pretty much ready to sand away.. with a primer scheduled in for the morning tomorrow.
However, there was time in the early afternoon to stir up the pot of primer to do the tops, sides and undersides of the doors. These doors were left in a pretty bad paint condition... and in some spots, they weren't even painted. So moisture was starting to seep in... and that is never a really good combination to go along with wood.
Now, this pot is way too big for what I need it for in this project... but there will be the complete timber frames of all the windows that will still need to be done sometime this summer... and that will be quite a large job. Probably done one window frame at a time!
Eeep.... it was pretty easy to do the sides and the top of the doors... but the underside was quite tricky. These doors opened outwards, and so it was possible to get a painbrush under there by lying on my back and painting at an awkward angle...
... as you can see, a pretty low clearance... but at least there was a clearance! Weirdly enough, lying on your back on a warm concrete slab is strangely relaxing! I could almost have fallen asleep there! Now, it would have been much easier to just take the door off the hinges and painted it on a trestle instead... but I know my limits, it is likely that I would take the door off... and then the door would be still off until I called someone who knew how to put it back on properly! So... I went with the safer, but more awkward option! Unfortunately, there are two more doors that open inwards... and I won't have the lower clearance to play this trick again, I'm going to have to learn how to take the door off!
So, tomorrow, I have a whole clear day (famous last words...)... the doors will need to be top coated with the regular outdoor paint, and the top of the patio primed... and hopefully painted! We'll see if that manages to work out the way that I planned... My wife is already making noises about doing some indoor work...
