Weirdly enough, Eurovision is sort of a weird cult thing in Australia... well, amongst some people. My wife had never really watched it, but I had always tuned in year after year when I was studying at University. There was something unintentionally hilarious about it... Europeans have "interesting" values when it comes to music, costuming, dancing and stage effects... sometimes, it is a real throwback to earlier decades which is pretty cute and funny!
... of course, then there are the ones that are risque and take more of a cue from commercial music, but those are a bit sad. I really like the borderline kitsch versions the best!
Anyway, over the past week or so, I have been subjected to the constant barrage of Eurovision music from the finalists as my oldest daughter (and youngest...) have been totally obsessed about it after hearing about it from school friends and through the Jeugdjournaal (the kids news presentation). Honestly, the variety of music styles is completely wild... from sort of '80s inspired pop to heavy metal and then the soulful, and then the crappy Ibiza dance/party themes (no bias here...).
Last night, the finals were being aired from Rotterdam... and we tuned into the BBC broadcast of the show. Mostly because the Brits are much like their Australian commentators and take the whole proceedings with a huge does of "tongue in cheek" humour. Probably because they never win and no-one ever votes for them....
So, we spent the whole evening as a family watching the finals... from 9 in the evening through to about 1 in the morning. I didn't quite make it to the end, and the little crashed shortly after the start. But my wife and oldest girl were totally into it and made it through to the end! Ah, some quality family time there!
Anyway, in the end the Italians won this year... however, I was really rooting for Iceland and Germany as my favourites! My wife and oldest had different preferences (see below), and the debate over who should have won continues through to the new day... I wonder if this is how wars start?
Meanwhile, my oldest girl really was into the French one.
... and my wife was hoping that the Swiss one would get the prize.
So, I wonder what that says about our tastes in music?
