Which Activities and Businesses Are Actually Essential?

In this age of challenges, the term "essential" has arisen as a new concept to separate certain activities from each other, as well as businesses. Before there was one broad category of activities that anyone was free to engage in, but now there are two: "essential" and "non-essential" with the latter being restricted in many places. I'm here to explore this concept of non-essential activities, because while the distinction is pretty stark these days, this concept of non-essential or frivolous activities has been around for a very long time.
