Pig slaughtering scams cost crypto investors billions.

Pig butchering scams, which entice victims into false bitcoin investments, are rising significantly. Scams typically start with benign social media, dating app, or text conversations.

Wire and the Independent Community Bankers of America warn that these fraudsters are sometimes forced workers for criminals. Many of these frauds are perpetrated by sophisticated Southeast Asian crime syndicates, especially in Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, where underground casinos and uncontrolled borders foster money laundering.

Scammers pose as friends or love partners to gain trust. Once victims feel safe, they advise them to invest in phony cryptocurrency sites with large profits.

First, victims may be permitted to withdraw tiny amounts, bolstering the validity illusion. When greater withdrawals are attempted, fraudsters charge fees or taxes. They can disappear, leaving victims with empty accounts and high debt. Many victims take out loans, liquidate assets, or use retirement money thinking they're making good investments.

These frauds have expanded considerably in recent years due to cryptocurrencies, according to a comprehensive Wired study. The FBI warns that pig slaughtering scams are one of the worst bitcoin frauds. Other studies projected $75 billion in damages, whereas the government estimated $4 billion.

Scammers "fatten up" their victims by earning their trust and confidence before draining their capital in one fatal blow, thus the name "pig butchering".

The Independent Community Bankers of America states that certain criminal enterprises use forced labor, with people compelled to perform frauds under fear.

Consumers should be wary of unsolicited investment proposals and platforms offering big profits, say authorities. Pig butchering scam victims should report suspicious behavior to the FBI or FinCEN promptly to avoid additional financial loss.
