My Corn Patch

The Raccoons Love My Corn... UGH!

Earlier this week, I stepped out to the back garden and discovered that my corn patch was attacked or should I say 'decimated'. I suspected this was the work of a raccoon or possibly a family of raccoons. I set up my trap to see what would happen. On the first morning the trap was empty. The next morning, my suspicions were proven correct when I found a young raccoon, a yearling trapped in the cage. Because it was very young, I then suspected it was part of a brood and that there were others. Well, yesterday morning and again this morning, I caught two more. That's 3 raccoons, 3 days in a row.

I still suspect there are more raccoons so I'll have to keep the trap out a bit longer. I live up on the banks of the Grand River that cuts through Cambridge, Ontario, where I live so I took the trapped raccoons for a 5 minute drive to the other side of the river where it's forested and released them. Although I was angry and frustrated at the damage done to my corn, I also understood that these animals are just trying to survive and can't comprehend the consequences of their actions. I can always replant corn for next year although I'll be sure to build an enclosure to keep the animals out. I did have plastic mesh around my corn but it wasn't strong enough to keep the raccoons out. They are very clever indeed.

The picture I've uploaded shows the corn at the beginning of July and looking great. It's the first time I attempted at growing corn so I was very disappointed when I saw my nearly destroyed corn patch. I might still get a few ears of corn yet so it's not a total loss. Wish me luck for next year's crop.

I've also uploaded a video on my new channel at BitChute of my encounter with the third raccoon this morning and you can see how awful the corn now looks. I used wooden stilts to keep the corn stalks standing upright. The link to my video is in the description below. Please consider subscribing to my new BitChute channel, link also below, as I will be uploading my videos there from now on.

Update: August 10, 2021 - Yesterday, I trapped the fifth raccoon. I thought that was it but this morning, yet again, there was another raccoon caught in the trap. That's 6 in total since I set up the trap about 2 weeks ago. I'm hoping this is it but I won't be surprised if I trap some more. All the raccoons have been humanely released back into the wild.

Update August 11, 2021: Yesterday, went outside in the morning and saw that I trapped a 6th raccoon. Looks like there's an epidemic of raccoons in my neighborhood, lol. There were none in the trap this morning. Next year, I'm definitely enclosing my corn patch!
