GPT-5’s Rocky Rollout: Why the AI “Superintelligence” Dream Just Hit a Reality Check

By FKlivestolearn | Technicity | 18 Aug 2025

Sam Altman promised systems “smarter than people,” but GPT-5’s shaky launch revealed the gap between AI hype and reality.

Nearly a year ago, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman boldly proclaimed that artificial superintelligence was “just around the corner.” Not long after, he upped the ante—declaring that OpenAI had built systems “smarter than people in many ways.” These were stirring declarations, fanning flames of excitement about a technological breakthrough that promised to redefine intelligence itself.

Fast-forward to August 7, 2025, the much-anticipated release of GPT-5. Marketed as “our smartest, fastest, most useful model yet,” the model introduced a unified system with dynamic routing between quick, efficient responses and deep "thinking" modes, asserted to deliver breakthroughs in coding, creative writing, health, multimodal understanding, and beyond. Yet within days—and even hours—of that launch, a wave of negative feedback surfaced. The contrast between superintelligence rhetoric and a troubled debut could not be starker.

1. Disconnection Between Hype and Reality

Reports quickly branded the rollout as “underwhelming,” noting GPT-5 offered minor improvements in cost-efficiency and tooling, but fell short of any revolutionary leap. Critics described its personality as dull and impersonal, and flagged factual inaccuracies that undercut the aura of expert-level intelligence. Moreover, Altman’s claims of radical progress ran directly against public perception, amplifying the gap between expectation and deliverable results.

2. Technical Glitches Undermine Confidence

Signs of trouble surfaced immediately. Users experienced sluggish responses, hallucinations, and “surprising errors” as technical faults emerged—an especially glaring contrast to the anticipated seamless experience. In one instance, the automatic model routing system broke temporarily, leading to noticeably poorer quality output. Altman himself admitted that "GPT-5 seemed way dumber" during that period. Additionally, degrading usage limits, such as only 200 messages per week for the "thinking" mode, left professional users feeling constrained.

3. Emotional Attachment, Removed

Perhaps most revealing: public sentiment. Many users voiced emotional attachment to GPT-4o, citing its warmer, more personable tone. GPT-5’s colder demeanor felt jarring. Worse, GPT-4o and other legacy models were removed without warning, except for Pro users, prompting frustration and grief among loyal users. OpenAI reversed course—bringing back GPT-4o for Plus users and promising more customizable personalities for GPT-5, but the backlash highlighted a deeper truth: AI isn’t only a tool—it’s a companion in digital form.

4. The AI Trough of Disillusionment

Industry commentators have framed GPT-5’s launch as emblematic of the AI sector entering a “trough of disillusionment.” After the sheen of hype, what follows is often raw user scrutiny—and GPT-5 is squarely in that phase. Even incremental improvements pale when expectations are set sky-high. Yet, there remains recognition that practical gains like better code generation, enterprise usability, and affordability may serve long-term adoption more effectively than headline-grabbing breakthroughs.

5. The Unavoidable Reality Check

Why, then, is this rocky debut the reality check we needed?

  1. It exposes the peril of hype. Grandiose promises raise the ceiling for disappointment, especially in a domain as complex as AI.
  2. It’s a reminder that AI, no matter how advanced, remains fallible, capable of basic errors, such as the math mistake seen during the launch, and still requires constant human oversight.
  3. It highlights the importance of user experience. Emotional resonance, control, and reliability matter just as much as raw capability.
  4. It reorients focus toward utility over mystique. Real-world incremental gains, particularly in enterprise and developer contexts, are more sustainable than abstract future intelligence.
  5. It signals the need for tempering expectations. The road to true superintelligence is long, not meteoric, and GPT-5’s launch reminds us that the journey will likely be one of steady refinement, not sudden leaps.

Recalibrating Our Expectations

The GPT-5 rollout underscores a vital lesson: hype can cloud perception, but true progress reveals itself through persistence, incremental improvement, and respect for users' real-world needs and emotions. Let this be a watershed moment—prompting more measured discourse around the evolution of AI, its limits, and how it improves lives, rather than merely dazzling minds.
