Virtual friends are needed now and after the pandemic

The pandemic has shown us how much we need socialization for a good and healthy sense of well-being. For example, a recent open letter by 300 leading therapists written for Meta (formerly "Facebook") showed their need to access Meta's data collected so they can best analyze the youth's behavior.  Unfortunately for the therapists, Meta (formerly "Facebook") has only ever been concerned with their monetization of their user's data and it has never been concerned about their user's mental health or well-being. 

During lockdown, mental health issues have skyrocketed and many people are suffering from depression, loneliness and suicidal thoughts.  The ease of use and its instant accessibility make the internet the ideal place to meet the needs of its users.  Rather than creating chatrooms that have been inundated with bots and false users, some developers of artificially intelligent personalities have been busy creating their versions of AI friends. 

For example, a metaverse development company SpecTruth, is developing a multi-layers approach to providing AI virtual friendship.  Each user will have its own AI virtual friend ("friend") that will learn and interact with its user.  The friend's interactions with the user will allow data to be collected and analyzed to create a unique social interaction and experience that grows with time. The friend will interact with its users in a manner that will help guide them for self therapy, recommend self help videos, join social groups, and meet likeminded users.  

The data collected will then be stored using blockchain technology (more efficient, safer, and less energy consumed) and then analyzed in conjunction with all of the data collected in a mega data analysis.  Licensed behaviorists will used a proprietary AI program to analyze the mega data to identify trends, disorders, patterns in diagnosis, effectiveness of treatments, and prepare the best treatment protocols. 

Using a "nudge" method, the personalized friends will be able to help its users achieve their best results through suggesting therapeutic videos, social games,  and real world friend suggestions. Nudge theory is concerned with the design of choices. Nudge theory proposes that the designing of choices should be based on how people actually think and decide (more "feeling"), rather than how leaders and authorities traditionally (and typically incorrectly) believe people think and decide (more "logical").  In this respect, Nudge theory is a modern and more sophisticated approach to achieving change in people than traditional methods such as direct instruction, enforcement, etc.  Central to the theory is that people can be helped to think appropriately and make better decisions.

As an example, despite 9 out of 10 people in the UK supporting organ donation, only 1/3 of people actually volunteered to be donors.  The message “If you needed an organ transplant, would you have one? If so, please help others.” was used when renewing car tax online.  This message was designed the UK Government’s Behavioural Insights team or “Nudge” Unit.  They found that people were most receptive to messages that affect them personally.  This simple yet reciprocal message has meant an estimated 100,000 additional donors each year. 

With proper and helpful "nudging," people can slowly and efficiently become more adapted to meeting the new and challenging world.

In short, virtual friends are needed by people so they best adapt to the new and changing world around us.
