Our ranking #3
The Sandbox has its own page in our games catalog, and you can compare it with every other title in our ranked list of crypto games.
What you earn and how: The Sandbox is free-to-play with optional purchases, and it uses Play&Earn: the docs say players may earn SAND and NFT rewards, and most Seasons and Events include Play&Earn mechanics. Season 7, set for February 25, 2026, had a prize pool of more than 650,000 SAND. Creators can also win prizes in contests, such as the $7,500 AI Creator Game Jam (as of 2026-08-07) and a $5,000 SAND content creator bounty (as of 2026-09-22). Some Experiences require a specific NFT to enter. The cheapest OpenSea listing was 0.022567 ETH, about $51, as of 2026-10-31.
How we researched this review
This is a research-based review, not a play log: nobody on our team claims hours in The Sandbox here. We read our catalog entry, the whitepaper and docs, the official gameplay guides and store listings, 6 forum or blog pages, the public Telegram and X channels, the official marketplace and getting-started guide, the official update history and news coverage, token market data, NFT market data, team, funding and audit records (read on 2026-10-31). Every price, count and size in this review carries the date of its own reading where the source gives one. Forum posts, community chats and docs pages often carry no date: those sources are undated, and each one is linked where we use it so you can check it yourself.

What is The Sandbox?
The Sandbox is a free-to-play virtual world where users build the games. Players make their own Experiences and play ones that other people made, so there’s no single fixed game to work through. It mixes adventure, casual, metaverse, MMORPG and multiplayer play, and Animoca Brands is the developer.
The Sandbox game screenshot.
The home chain is Ethereum. LAND parcels are ERC-721 tokens, and assets made by creators can be minted as ERC-1155 tokens. SAND, LAND and CATALYST rewards are paid out on Polygon. SAND is the main utility token and currency, used in the Marketplace, for staking and for governance votes.
One account logs you into three programs. VoxEdit is a free no-code tool for modelling blocks, NPCs, enemies and avatar gear, Game Maker turns those assets into Experiences with plug-and-play logic, and the Game Client is where you play other people’s Experiences and go to events. You don’t need a wallet to download the tools, share Experiences or play thousands of free ones. Connect a wallet and you can own assets, sell your creations and enter contests for prizes, but you have to pass KYC before you can claim rewards.
The Sandbox is live, and its docs run Alpha Season 6, which adds new Abilities and unique rewards for players.
Gameplay experience
Each session in The Sandbox plays the way the creator of the loaded Experience designed it. In the Game Client you explore other people’s Experiences and attend virtual events, and the assets in those worlds are recorded on Ethereum.

How a match plays
The first time you open any Experience, a tip screen lists the controls it needs. Press ESC to open the main menu and see the controls at any point during play. The ` key shows them at a glance, including custom bindings on the number keys and the mouse.
An endless-runner level puts a small character in third-person view on a long road between colourful blocky skyscrapers under an orange sunset sky. A first-person shooter swaps that for grey block walls in a desert, with team scores and a match timer across the top.
Rules set by the creator decide how a round resolves. Picking up a tagged collectable such as an Ancient Treasure asset can complete a quest objective and send a message to every system. A sound can play when a quest starts or ends. Shops check whether you have enough Money before they subtract an item’s price. HUD text can show status, player and location names, and level-up notices.
Modes
Experience types include tower defense, horror and backrooms, cooking simulators, resource management, parkour and platformers, survival, action-adventure, night clubs and concerts, virtual homes and architecture, NFT galleries and in-game shops, puzzle games, social hubs and simulation.
Creators can also build beat ’em ups against waves of enemies, hack-and-slash games and point-and-click adventures. Metroidvanias with interconnected levels and character upgrades are on the list too. So are Western RPGs where choices shape the story, JRPGs with turn-based or action combat, tactical RPGs built on unit positioning, and real-time strategy with resources and armies to manage. Any of these genres can run single-player or multiplayer logic.
The Sandbox NEXT is a mobile multiplayer extraction and survival game that carries over your identity, progression and voxel assets from the platform. It is fast-paced, replayable PvP, and you can play it with avatars from over 56 branded collections.
Progression and difficulty
Access is the designer’s choice. Many Experiences are free to play, while others require a specific NFT, or one from a set collection, for bonus features or for all of their gameplay. Players may earn SAND and NFT rewards through Play&Earn mechanics, and SAND buys avatars, equipment and the NFTs that open gated content.
VoxEdit is free no-code modelling software for terrain blocks, NPCs, enemies and avatar equipment, with rigging and animation; one metre equals 32x32x32 voxels and a human avatar stands two metres tall. A Skeleton hierarchy controls how the parts of a model move and rotate. Game Maker assembles assets with plug-and-play logic, and its Game Rules visual scripting tool in the Gameplay menu sets numbers, text, time and true/false values and controls the HUD.
Controls and platforms
Desktop play uses keyboard and mouse, and the camera depends on the Experience: third person in the endless runner, first person in the shooter. The desktop client installs through a launcher.
Getting started
One account login covers the Game Client, VoxEdit and Game Maker. The free path gives you the many free-to-play Experiences plus the building tools, and building and sharing Experiences costs nothing.
- Create your account.
- Download the launcher and start the client.
- Equip an avatar: buy one or make one, and note that some avatar NFTs carry perks such as exclusive gameplay access or rewards.
- Play the First Time Square tutorial, which teaches the controls through play.
Graphics, art and sound
The Sandbox is a voxel world, and players make almost everything you see in it: the environments, characters and objects that fill each Experience are built by players and recorded on-chain. The look shifts from one Experience to the next, but every creator works with the same cube-based tools and the same scale.

Art style and world
The world is built from voxels, at a scale where one metre equals 32x32x32 voxels. Terrain is made of blocks, a special type of entity created in VoxEdit’s Block editor by painting colour onto a cube. Blocks can be liquid or solid with varied transparency, and they form walls or terrain.
Simple assets sit on top of the terrain: pickable objects, interactive props, collectables, furniture and scenery, decorative fine art and simple buildings. Creators can apply logic to assets to make them interactive. The Creator Portal carries art technique guides for artists next to its guides for narrative designers and game designers.
Characters and animation
Compound assets are made in the Animator by combining simple assets into a rig. Once an asset is rigged, you can give it several animations (poses) and add motion to each one on a timeline. With a template, all you need to know is how to edit simple assets to make a new animated one.
Effects attach to objects as components. In one projectile setup, a pickable Dragon Egg asset carries a Visual FX component called Beverage wisp.
Sandbox Studio’s branding puts stylised avatar characters around its logo, next to a grid of colourful game thumbnails.
Interface and menus
Game Maker’s Game Rules system lets creators design a custom HUD for the player as well as the logic running behind the scenes.
Music and sound
Audio in Game Maker runs through Wwise, which arrived with the GM 0.11 update for the highest quality audio. The Play Sound component plays a sound effect, ambient sound or music, either globally or locally.
Economy and earning reality
You can play The Sandbox without a crypto wallet. Earning only starts once you connect a wallet. The rewards come from seasons and creator contests, and no fixed payout rate is attached to them. All of the no-code software is free to download and use, sharing an Experience is free even without LAND, and thousands of free Experiences need no cryptocurrency wallet.
The Sandbox game screenshot.
Where rewards come from
Players earn through Alpha Season 6, which offers new Abilities and unique rewards along the way. Claimed rewards go through the Claim Rewards section of the player docs. Creators have a second route: prizes in VoxEdit contests and game jams.
Owning LAND matters more for creators than for players. Without a LAND NFT you can still make a free Experience page and list it in the Game Maker Gallery. If you own LAND, you can publish your Experience to it, and players enter straight from its PLAY button.
Across the game’s collections, 25,498 wallets hold its NFTs as of October 31, 2026, so the owning side of the economy is a small group compared with the free player base.
What owning costs, and what SAND is worth
As of October 31, 2026, the cheapest item in The Sandbox’s OpenSea collection was listed at 0.022567 ETH, about $51, the lowest entry price if you want to own an asset.
SAND traded at $0.04667 on October 31, 2026, against an all-time high of $8.40 on November 24, 2021. Anyone who bought SAND at the peak has lost almost all of the value.
Supply dilution is a small risk for SAND at this point. Circulating supply was 2,937,639,702 SAND against a 3,000,000,000 cap as of October 31, 2026, so nearly every token that will exist is already on the market.
Players can’t work out a break-even, because the season rewards have no published dollar value and the cheapest asset costs about $51. The Sandbox is a free game with optional ownership, and its earning side is thin and depends on the season.

SAND has almost no dilution left to fear, and very little of its 2021 value left either. As of October 31, 2026, its market cap was $136.2 million and its fully diluted value was $139.1 million, which puts fully diluted value at 1 times market cap.

The small gap between SAND’s market cap and fully diluted value cuts both ways. Few new tokens are left to come out and press on the price, but there is also no large locked reserve whose release a holder can plan around. The price depends on demand for SAND itself.

SAND’s price trend over recent days points down. The token was down 0.2% in 24 hours and down 9.1% over 7 days as of October 31, 2026. It trades 99.4% below its all-time high, so someone who bought at the peak has lost nearly all of their stake in dollar terms.
Trading in SAND is still active, with $46.7 million in 24-hour trading volume as of October 31, 2026.

A SAND holder carries little unlock risk and a lot of price risk. The token keeps a market cap in the hundreds of millions of dollars and steady liquidity, but it sits at a small fraction of its peak value.

LAND is the plot you build on in The Sandbox. The map is where you play LAND owners’ user-generated content, and you also buy LAND there.
You don’t need an NFT to play The Sandbox or to show players a game you’ve built. LAND decides whether players can launch your work straight from its page. A creator without a LAND NFT can still create a free Experience page and share its link, and players then find it in the Game Maker Gallery.
Avatars, equipment and assets for building games are owned as NFTs that add to play and creation. SAND is the currency of the Marketplace where you spend it. The collection sits on Ethereum and also trades on OpenSea.
Holding an NFT is not the only way creators get paid. No figure for how concentrated NFT ownership is was available.

2019-05-23 The Sandbox Funding Round $2.5 million Hashed, Blocore, ThunderCore and 4 more
Rounds as recorded in our funding database; each round links its page there.
The Sandbox has public founders, a funding record going back to 2019 and audited core contracts. Animoca Brands is the developer. The company started as Pixowl in 2011, founded by Arthur Madrid, the CEO, and Sébastien Borget, the COO. The team works remotely, with members contributing from locations around the world.
Funding rounds
On May 23, 2019, The Sandbox raised $2.5 million from Hashed, Blocore, ThunderCore, Mind Fund, Alexis Bonte, Klaytn and HelixFund. Its largest round was a $93 million Series B on November 2, 2021. The investors were SoftBank, Samsung Next, Polygon Studios, LG Technology Ventures, Animoca Brands, Galaxy Interactive, Kingsway Capital, Sound Ventures, True Global Ventures, Blue Pool Capital, Liberty City Ventures and Red Beard Ventures.
SoftBank Vision Fund 2 led that round, and Borget said the money would help scale up growth strategy, operations and player acquisition. The pitch at the time was a destination where brands, IPs and celebrities meet fans through games, live performances and social experiences. In the same announcement, Thomas Vu, former executive producer and head of franchise at Riot Games, joined as an advisor, along with Nicholas Adler, manager and brand curator for Snoop Dogg.
Two more rounds of $20 million each came in 2024. Animoca Brands and Kingsway Capital backed both, on June 6 and November 16, 2024, and LG Technology Ventures and True Global Ventures also joined the June round. That means the developer has put money into every round since 2021.
Audits and what the contracts cover
CertiK audited the SAND, LAND and LANDSale smart contracts, using manual review, static analysis and formal verification to check them for vulnerabilities. CertiK describes SAND as an ERC-20 token that gamers, developers and publishers can use to monetise their creations. It describes LAND as digital real estate where game developers host their games.

The Sandbox has a large audience on X and a much smaller one on Telegram, and its official account mostly promotes creator tools and games made by the community. As of October 31, 2026, the @TheSandboxGame account on X had 1,000,000 followers, while only a few hundred members were active in the Telegram group at that reading.
The Sandbox community size as of 31 Oct 2026, read from the public channels.
What the official account posts
On June 9, 2026, The Sandbox’s account on X asked creators to apply for early access to The Sandbox Studio and called it an AI game engine for creators. Most of what the team puts in front of its biggest audience is about user-made games and the tools for making them.
The Sandbox’s X account also comments on wider crypto events. On October 30, 2026, it posted that the team was aware of the security incident affecting Binance.
How the team handled the bridge exploit
The clearest example of the developers responding to a problem came after a bridge exploit. crypto.news reported that on August 21, 2026, the exploit drained about 14.7 million SAND, worth roughly $700,000, from an Ethereum vault, and that The Sandbox pledged to repay eligible SAND holders 1:1. The compensation comes from The Sandbox treasury, and no new SAND is minted to pay it.
The team announced the repayment plan on X on August 27, 2026. crypto.news reported that claims were expected to open within two weeks and stay open for another two weeks, so affected holders have a short window to claim.
Roadmap and current status
Where the platform stands
The Sandbox is live on Ethereum, and most of its work now goes into Sandbox Studio, an AI-assisted game engine that is replacing the old toolset. Studio’s public launch was planned for October 2026, and as of October 21, 2026 it had not launched.
The Sandbox game screenshot.
Alpha Season 6 launched in Q3 2025 with Black Mirror, Smurfs, Cirque du Soleil and King Kong content. One Season 7 release was Smiley Factory, a business tycoon game set in a Smiley-branded clothing factory.
Sandbox Studio was announced on June 10, 2026. Its alpha drew more than 12,000 applications and let in about 30 creators. By October 4, 2026, more than 100 creators had built more than 100 games across 3.5 months of closed testing, which included four game jams. Xsolla will handle payments for Studio games, and games published on LAND will get catalog visibility by tier and a larger revenue share.
New titles and the wider ecosystem
The Sandbox NEXT is a multiplayer extraction and survival game for mobile, built on Unreal Engine. Pre-registration for its playtest opened in March 2026, and players keep their identity, progression and voxel assets in it.
Animoca’s chess title Anichess debuted King’s Gambit at a Speed Chess Championship hosted by Chess.com in February 2026, and it ran a voxel chess drop with The Sandbox from July 24 to 27, 2026. Corners, an invite-only beta on Base, uses SAND as its main utility token.
In August 2025, Cointribune reported that The Sandbox had laid off more than 250 employees, over half its staff. Crypto Briefing reported the same month that Arthur Madrid had become chairman and Sébastien Borget global ambassador.
Risks
The biggest risk for a SAND holder is the token’s plumbing. The August 21, 2026 bridge exploit drained SAND from an Ethereum vault, and the fix depends on The Sandbox’s own treasury. The company pledged to reimburse eligible SAND holders 1:1 from its treasury without minting new SAND, crypto.news reported. Claims were expected to open within two weeks and stay open for another two weeks, so only eligible holders who claim inside that window get covered.
The Sandbox’s public security review is narrow. CertiK reviewed the source code of the SAND, LAND and LANDSale smart contracts using manual review, static analysis and formal verification. The bridge drained in the August 21 exploit is not on that list.
The platform is also changing direction with Next, which is built on Unreal Engine after years on Unity. GamesBeat called the move to mobile a departure for a platform that bet heavily on NFTs and blockchain. Next carries over players’ identity, progression and assets from The Sandbox platform, but it had only opened pre-registration for playtesting. Anyone holding assets for future use in Next is betting on a game that is still at the playtest stage.
The Sandbox alternatives
Comparable games on our ranked list: Pixels, Big Time and Cambria. The Sandbox sits at #3. Each one’s page has its genre, chain, token and current status side by side with this one.
What to watch next
- Upcoming: The Sandbox brings Xsolla payments to The Sandbox Studio
- Upcoming: The Sandbox founders launch $1 million Hollywood Hills film campaign.
Verdict: is The Sandbox worth your time?
The Sandbox is worth your time if you want to build games. It’s a poor fit if you want to be paid for playing. Its creator tools moved quickly through 2026, while SAND has lost almost all of its 2021 value and season rewards come with no published dollar figure.
Who it suits and who should skip it
Builders get the most from it. The no-code software is free, sharing an Experience is free even without LAND, and you don’t need a crypto wallet to play.
Casual players can get in easily too. Season 7 launched on February 25, 2026, and as we reported, it let players open certain experiences straight from a web browser.
If earning is your goal, skip it. Players may earn SAND and NFT rewards through Play&Earn mechanics, but you can only claim them with a connected wallet and after a KYC check. SAND holders also have the August 2026 bridge exploit to consider. Compensation claims ran from September 8 to September 22, 2026.
What The Sandbox has over them is its set of free building tools. If you won’t use those tools, compare the four on how they play.
What would move the score
Sandbox Studio decides most of it. Its public launch was planned for October 2026, and as of October 21, 2026, Studio had not launched, so its Xsolla payment tools were not live for players. If the public launch goes well, the score goes up. Another delay or another security incident would bring it down.
The Sandbox NEXT is the other title to watch. GamesBeat reported on March 18, 2026 that The Sandbox had opened pre-registration for playtesting the mobile battle royale, which is built on Unreal Engine. GamesBeat called the mobile game a departure for the platform.
