Fallen tree trunk in Fern patch - Ultraviolet and Infrared Photography

By Solominer | Solominer | 20 Nov 2019

Trees fall all the time in the forest, though this tree fell into a Fern patch, and has given it a unique look in the Ultraviolet and Infrared spectrums. The tree looks old and its been down for awhile now, and the Ferns dont seem to mind. Probably makes great fertilizer for the Cryptograms around.

This old wood looks like its been fallen for awhile now, some Moss or Lichen was growing on the trunk breaking down it further. It can be seen as a white color as it will reflect infrared light away from its self.

The Ferns continued to grow after the tree fell on them, growing up along the trunk now.

Wild Muscadine saplings can be seen around areas where the Ferns have not grown.

The creek was near by, can be seen as a dark black surface through the tree line. Due to the water absorbing most light hitting it.

Other trees have fallen as well, some fell along the creek and formed a bridge to cross the water for some animals. Though this would make it hard for us to maneuver a canoe in the creek.

Looking up, patches of the Ultraviolet sky can be seen. The trees not able to take up all of the space to block out the sunlight.

Parts of the trail had fallen trees, obstructing the trail but I was able to climb through little openings to keep on my walk with this little trail closed to most. The storms will close down parts of the trail due to trees falling, making Forestry ATVs not passable in the area. But these trails are still open to foot traffic, though looks like not many venture back into those areas.

I take pictures with a special camera. Its a Mirrorless DSLR that has been modified by Life Pixel to see light in other wavelengths. This allows my camera to see light in the Infrared [IR] around 1300 NM wavelength, through the visual spectrum and into the Ultraviolet A and B wavelengths roughly into the 300 NM wavelength.

I carry many filters on me to make the photos you see in my blog, these filters screw on my lens and help me isolate certain wavelengths for certain scenes. These filters can be IR / UV pass-through filters to assist me get a natural photo taking out the UV and IR light. Or I may use a Infrared pass-through filter capture just IR light. I can do the same with UV light as well, though I need some better filters which they can cost a few hundred dollars for true Ultraviolet pass through filters. So for right now I have B + W 403 bandpass filters that still allow some IR light in, due to their cheaper material.

There are also exotic glasses made of sapphire and germanium I am open to working with to replace my silica glass hot mirror with a material that allows even longer wavelengths of infrared to enter my cameras sensor. Special sensors, lenses and filters of that material would be needed as well, so it would be a big project but one that may give some even more unique photography results.
