Bowling out the Peach tree

By Solominer | Solominer | 8 Feb 2020

I have been growing Peaches for the last seven or so years now. Due to living in North Georgia they do not always make it to fruit unlike South Georgia. The flowers tend to open very early in the spring, usually before the frosts are over. This causes the flowers to fall off and for fruit to not grow for that year. I cannot control the weather, but I can help shape the plant to grow better when it does get fruit on successful year. The technique im using is called bowling, the idea is to shape the peach tree like a bowl. By cutting off vertical growth, and growth facing inside of the tree this will allow better air flow and light to each all parts of the Peach tree. This will help the fruits grow better and with a lower risk of mildew due to good air flow. I prune it every year, usually in the early January before the flowers form. I trim it using handheld cutters and a poll trimmer to the hard to reach places.

More work is planned for the Peach tree, with years of pruning I have gotten about eight feet of horizontal growth. I should build some supports for the branches, so the weight does not break them. Most trees grow vertically so by changing that to horizontal it needs more support.

I should also add some more wood chips to the base and make sure the crown of the tree base stays covered. Lots of bugs try to attack my Peach tree so ill need to keep an eye on it, but at least it got a good haircut regardless of if it produces fruit this year or not.

Glad I have been able to keep it alive for so long, heard its pretty hard to keep fruit trees alive and happy but this one has not been too bad. Just knowing a little about where to look for pests goes a long way.
