It's a Friday night, a nostalgic one at that! What better way to look back into the past than fondly remembering some of those treats I used to enjoy as a wee lad. Of course everything on the following list was laden with sugar. What else would you expect? Here's five flavors from my childhood I'll never forget:
1. Surge
I'll never forget the taste of a cold can of Surge out of the vending machine at the neighborhood gas station. Chances were, I had either ridden there on a skateboard or a bike. Back in those days, 50 cents would get you can of your preferred pop from the vending machine. Pretty hard to imagine now, but that was the going rate back then. My favorite one to have clank out of the machine was that alien green citrus bile concoction. The taste was just irresistible on a hot summer day.
2. Lik-M-Aid / Fun Dip
I'll never forget how good those stix were. It was like pure sugar, amazing. I don't believe I ever consumed this product the way it was intended to be: use the stick to dip in the powder. I recall munching on the stick and when that was gone, I would pour the powder onto my tongue. The powder almost became a chore to consume. I was happy when they came out with packets with two stix and three flavors of the powder.
3. Jolt Cola
Whatever company made the glorious Jolt Cola knew exactly what we kids wanted to hear and what our parents loathed: "all the sugar and twice the caffeine." Though this potent pop was a bit harder to find (I had to venture to a particular general store to find it), it was always worth the trip. I think I can trace my penchant for energy drinks to Jolt. While I never had a two liter like the one pictured above, I thought the glass bottle the single serve versions came in was one of the finer points of the soda. I recall the taste was actually not that great (I definitely preferred a Coca-Cola Classic), but the after-effects were well worth it.
4. French Toast Crunch
Already a big fan of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, I was pleased to see the little General Mills Chef had cooked up something new and immediately pulled a box off the shelf and plopped it into the shopping cart my father was pushing. The taste was on point and became an instant favorite at the breakfast table. The little toast shapes were also great for my little LEGO people to eat at their breakfast too. In fact, the miniature pieces of French toast were perfect scale for pretty much any toys.
5. Flintstones Push-Ups
Okay, so that last flavor is technically three but you get the drift. I believe these push up pops are still around, but no longer bear the Flintstones characters or the original flavors. Each flavor was unique and memorable in its own way: the tangy sweetness of the Yabba Dabba Doo Orange (how can you top that name?), the delicious faux-blueberry flavor of Bedrock Berry, and the tartness of the Lime Rock Lime. It was probably the Flintstones that lured me in and these sweet treats were probably just average sherbet pops at best, but what's a kids food without a charismatic cartoon character on the package, right?
