Splinterlands Challenge of the Week: Venari Knifer!

This week's Splinterlands Challenge of the Week was to showcase the Venari knifer from the earth splinter...

This is a pretty useless card IMO - High mana for what you get - it's main use is as a tank but it has no 'tank buffs' to help keep it alive, especially in Bronze. Although it is fast and has thorns I just found myself losing most of the time playing this, which is damning in the Earth Splinter, usually an easy win (just NOT when you play the knifer!)

The battle below features a Level 1 Knifer which dies almost straight away, but I win in spite of this thanks mainly to my opponent's bad choice of cards!

The Rule Set and Line Up

  • Mana cap 25
  • Standard Rules apply (Bronze League!)

Summoner - Obsidian

  1. Venari Knifer - not my first choice of Tank, but the feature card!
  2. Regal Pelacor - magic attack one
  3. Venari Spellsmith - more magic and dispel (proved useful)
  4. The Goblin - just essential!
  5. The Chicken - opportunity and sneak soak (sorry Chicken!)

Did my strategy work?

Beautifully, to see it in action click here!

  • Round 1 - I lose my Knifer in Round one thanks mainly to the Pelacor Arbelist. I also lose my chicken to opportunity, but he's there to soak (sorry chicken!). At least I take out my opponent's tanks too!
  • Round 2 - I take out my opponent's Venari CrystalSmith, nice to get rid of the healer!
  • Round 3 - I out his Truth Speaker (well, one health!) but then I lose my Pelacor, and my SpellSmith, I take out his Time Mage.
  • Round 4 - thanks to my having a healing tank left standing and my opponent's big hitter being a ranged in first, it's all over!
  • Round 5 - I FINISH my opponent off!

How important was The Venari Knifer?

Not important at all! I won in spite of the Knifer doing almost nothing except soaking up the first round of attacks, and I'd usually expect a tank to last longer than that!

It was looking dodgy for me after round one with only 3 cards standing compared to my opponent's 5.

However, I managed to say alive long enough to get his big hitter in front where he was neutralised.

All in all an odd battle in which the Knifer contributed nothing TBH!

So happy days!

Final Thoughts: Venari Knifer - worth Buying?

No, you're better off focussing on a neutral tank for the same mana, use a SlipSpawn for higher mana battles or swap out the Knifer for a double tank strategy, either way you're looking at much better value without the Knifer!

If you don't yet play Splinterlands, why not give it a go?

In the summer of 2014, when I turned 41, I set myself the goal of retiring from paid-work by the age of 52. This blog charts my own strategy and progress, and explores different theories of financial independence and 'extreme early retirement'. It also provides the odd tip on how you might also retire early!
