The successor of the American chain of Starbucks coffee shops in Russia, renamed Stars Coffee, welcomed its first visitors in one of the Moscow cafes. They plan to open other cafes around the country by the end of September.
Starbucks
Starbucks' 130 coffee shops in Russia were bought in July by pro-Kremlin musician Timati and restaurant owner Anton Pinsky and renamed with the slogan "Bucks are gone, stars remain". The new logo replaces Starbucks' iconic double-tailed mermaid with a woman wearing a traditional Russian headdress, French news agency AFP reported.
Russian consumers will find most of Starbucks' well-known caffeinated beverages on the cafe's menu, and the new owners will also maintain the tradition of writing customers' names on cups when ordering. 80 percent of former Starbucks employees will also continue to work in the newly named coffee shops.
Goodbye, Old, Welcome, New?
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in late February, both consumers and investors began to pressure Western companies to cut ties with the Russian market, but license agreements could not be changed quickly.
The American coffee chain Starbucks, which had 130 coffee shops in Russia, announced in March that it was suspending its operations in the country due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and in May it finally left the Russian market. At the same time, the American giant assured that 2,000 Russian workers would be paid for another six months and that they would be helped to find new jobs.
