Why is Ethereum so Dominant?

By rah | rah | 9 Oct 2025

Ethereum is arguably the backbone of the decentralized crypto ecosystem. While it doesn't "run" the entire crypto world, its influence is immense across several key sectors and this is why Ethereum is so central to cryptoland. First and foremost it is the most widely used platform for building decentralised applications while its ecosystems supports a lot of interoperability with many other blockchains and tokens that have been designed to be Ethereum-compatible. A key reason for this is because Ethereum has a robust security track record and a large validator network.

The fact is - and the bottom line - that tens of thousands of tokens are built on Ethereum standards (ERC-20, etc.)

Furthermore, Ethereum's dominance goes beyond that. Ethereum pioneered programmable contracts; most dApps still run on Ethereum and Ethereum hosts the majority of NFT marketplaces and token standards (ERC-721, ERC-1155). Another thing that contributes to this dominance is that major stablecoins like USDT, USDC, and DAI operate heavily on it. Additionally, networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, and zkSync are built to scale Ethereum and most decentralised autonomous organisations use Ethereum for governance tokens.

So to sumarise while Ethereum doesn't entirely control the crypto world, it's the infrastructure layer for a massive portion of it, especially anything involving smart contracts, DeFi, and NFTs. After all, Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, trailing only Bitcoin. and ETH-based assets dominate DeFi, with protocols like Uniswap, Aave, and MakerDAO leading the charge.

Short and sweet today.

As always stay safe and stay well my friends
