I was somewhat shocked and surprised when something that could have compromised my crypto holdings happened last night. Fortunately I was vigilant to it and I just want to warn the rest of the community on a just in case basis.
This was not the article (about Cardano) which I intended to publish today - maybe tomorrow time allowing.
So last night I wanted to move some free LiteCoin to Coinbase from Dutchy Faucet but first of all I needed to add the sending address to Dutchy. This is a process I have done several times for a range of currencies.
So far so good.
So as usual I went to the correct place on Coinbase to copy the LiteCoin address ready for pasting and when I pasted the address that appeared was different to my Coinbase address. So I tried again with the same result. I then looked at my clipboard and cleared it (Windows Button + V - I didn't know this previously). I then copied it again and pasted and yet again it changed it.
So I cleared my clipboard again and this time I copy pasted into a NotePad document. And yet again it changed. Next I wrote the address manually into my Notepad document to copy paste and the stupid thing changed again.
In the end I had to do it manually, character by character.
I didn't have much time to look into the reasons why but I did find a quick answer on reddit that suggested that it might be malware known as Clipper. In which case I need to get rid of it if this is the case.
So to summarise, the warning is very simple. Watch your addresses and that they don't change when copying as somebody else will be the recipient of your currency.
