You may or may not have heard of it, but it is appearing all over what Dave Gorman calls the lower half of the internet or in popular feeds like MSN. Apparently, somebody as eminent as a Harvard University Professor has gone as far as to suggest that, due to it's erratic and unpredictable nature, it is an alien spaceship due to reach us in late October and that we should prepare for first contact and send our own probe to investigate or at the very least a welcome message.

I am reminded of the scene in the original Independence Day movie (1994) when the experts decided that the approaching object was not of natural origin because it was slowing down (I tried to find the clip but couldn't - sorry about that).

Well, I have been trawling the internet and looking at what the scientists are saying across the board and through careful detective work I have put it all together and I am here to share it with you now.

The the trajectory of the mysterious object appears to suggest that it has come from the Wolf 1061 system some 14 light years away, where we have detected a possibly habitable planet (referred to as Wolf 1061c). To put that into perspective, it would take the Voyager space probes, that have long left our Solar System, more than 18,000 years to cover the kind of distance involved. 18,000 years ago was firmly in the time of the prehistoric and so this object is either moving very fast or set off long ago.

The consensus appears to be that it is moving fast through space and probably taking advantage of folds in space which science fiction often calls worm holes.

The principle is that space may well be a flattened shape and not globular / spherical in structure, but paradoxically that doesn't mean that it has to be flat. Think of it as a folded piece of paper and, as demonstrated in 2D in the model above, short cuts can be taken, in the direction of the black arrows by passing through the black circles that represent in this diagram multiple wormholes thus reducing the amount of journey time.

However, the how doesn't really matter. What matters is that 31/Atlas is on our doorstep and by the end of the year the truth that I am sharing with you now will become public knowledge. Either way it has almost certainly traversed the 14 light years much quicker than we could and probably faster than any natural complex object (PLEASE NOTE sub-atomic particles discounted, because on their own they carry no real form) which again supports the idea that this is not of natural origin.

Furthermore, through the usage of powerful supercomputer modelling it has been further calculated (the science is beyond me so don't ask me to explain it) that it will arrive during the first week of November between the Earth and the Moon and the current thesis gives it a 78% chance of arriving over Moscow less than 24 hours later (sorry Mr Trump but the rest of the world isn't particularly America-centric and we think MAGA is a joke as it begs the question as to when the US was ever great and a mockery of any idea of American Exceptionalism - but that is a discussion for another day).

This could of course be a coincidence, but we shouldn't be too quick to dismiss things as so.

As I searched and searched this question puzzled me and I found very little to go on until I found just a small snippet on a PDF which I have copy pasted here for you to see. I have highlighted the bits I consider to be most significant.

So given what I have been able to uncover, I have presented you with what seems to be the most likely scenario. Let's just hope we are not in for a real Independence Day.

As many of you know, I do delve into the world of fiction and that is exactly what this is.

There was no PDF, nor any information about where 31/Atlas originated. However, some cosmologists do believe that space may indeed be folded and as such the wormhole theory does hold some water. Likewise, the nearest potential earth like planet is some 14 light years away and it is in the Wolf 1061 system and the travel time and distance figures using Voyager (not from Star Trek) as a model resulting in more than 18,000 years travel time are all relatively accurate.

What I have suggested above is a complete work of my imagination. The truth is that while 31/Atlas is behaving erratically and throwing up some anomalous date for those on Earth, who are watching it most closely, it is almost certainly a comet that is behaving so because it is either gathering or shedding ice as it hurtles through space.

We will know for sure when it gets closer.

In the meantime the scenario I have presented, highly hypothetical and almost certainly not true is not so completely impossible that we can totally rule it out. Some of you may even have been buying what I wrote as you were reading.

That is the point of fiction my friends - to sell a story as convincingly as possible.
