Hi there guys! Hope your day has been going well.(The day literally just started in my time zone)
I just recently finished setting up a mining rig in my new apartment.
If you follow my blog, you'd know that I used to stay in my college dorm. I decided to get an apartment close to school because the dorm was really limiting to me, as well as other factors that went on to affect my decision.
That said, I have gotten an apartment now, and the first thing I did(after setting up my stuff obviously) was to build a new mining rig!
I obviously am no mining expert, neither do i know my way around setting anything up.
But I do know the most profitable coins to mine, as well as the best miners for them.
So in this post, I will be sharing my rig setup (which includes the machines I'm using) and how I save power while I'm mining.(you'd love this nifty trick!)
I'll also be sharing the coins that I'm currently mining that are bringing me decent profits on the limited hardware that I have.
So let's get started!
Obviously, I'm a student, so I don't have a lot of spare money. I however trade cryptocurrencies on a daily basis, and I have been blessed with significant profits and a ballooning account since I began.(You can read my story on how I began here. That post really blew up!)
With the proceeds from my trading(which I don't like withdrawing), I was able to actually pay for the apartment (for a whole year), as well as setup my rig.
So here are all the details of the rig I'm currently using:
My miner of choice is the Antminer D3. It usually retails around £300 here in London, but I was able to get a decent £50 off on a retailer. I purchased three of these miners, putting my overall cost at £750.(Note: This is lesser than the price of some high end miners, so I'm off to a pretty rough start. But you'll see how I'm profitable soon.)
I chose this miner because it has a pretty decent hash rate (19.5 GH/s) for its price. It can also solve Bitcoin blocks very fast(if you wish to mine bitcoin, which you shouldn't) and it is an ASIC device, so it doesn't use up so much energy or electrical power.
It is also relatively compact, so I can have it on my desk(I actually have it under the desk, because of airflow) and not worry about space.
I did get some small fans (about 6) to help in keeping the machine cool. These aren't any special fans. They just plug into a USB hub and work
They are pretty powerful, and they each cost £15 on Amazon. So, that cost me £90, bringing my new total cost to £840.
I haven't factored in electricity bills yet. I figured that I'd just pay off the electricity bills from my trading profits until I can become profitable and have the setup pay for itself, as well as give me some profits.
All the boring stuff aside(including that math...ewww), let's get to the interesting part: THE MONEY!
Here, I'll tell you the coins I mine, and why I mine them. Note that you could totally mine some of these coins on your desktop right now, once you go through the original setup.
So here are the coins I mine, and why:
1. GRIN
I love mining Grin, because they have something for everyone. First off, Grin uses a proof of work consensus system. But that's not the special part. Grin uses two PoW consensus systems, one of which is made to block out ASIC devices, and the other is made to embrace them.
Grin also gives out 60 coins per block mined, and each one is worth about $2.80.
Grin can be exchanged on about 24 exchanges, including HitBTC and KuCoin.
So why do I mine grin?
Simple. Because grin has an unlimited number of coins. This means that my mining process is indefinite. I also mine Grin because of the block rewards. 60 coins * $2.80 gives a pretty decent $168 per block, and my hardware is powerful enough for at least one block a day.
You can see how to setup your mining for Grin here.
2. DASH
After doing a bit of research, I saw that mining DASH would be very profitable for this my setup. Most of the posts I read were from 2019 though, so I don't know if those metrics still hold true.(As I said, ok no mining expert)
What I do know however is that my miners completely crush it while mining DASH(according to what I read). I haven't actually started mining DASH yet, but it seems like I would be profitable right away from the calculations I have done with a DASH profitability calculator. The calculator estimated about $1.84 in profit everyday, after paying for my electricity consumption.
This is a very nice figure, and as I keep on using my earnings to upgrade my hardware, while trying to keep my power consumption on the low, I will become much more profitable.
Ok. I promised to tell you how I keep power consumption on edge.
It's really simple. I only use my miners when I am away from the house, or when I am asleep. When I'm around and I'm actively using electricity, I don't use the miners at all. This is to really be aggressive and save costs.
So when I'm leaving the house, I leave the miners on, but turn everything else off (including the firdge). This is to ensure that the power used is minute. I also do the same thing when I'm asleep. Except I leave one air conditioner on to make the place cool and comfortable.
That's how I save costs!
Thanks for reading this guide guys. I will update you once a month on how things are going with my rig, so stay tuned!
