It's definitely not huge, but it's still an important milestone I wanted to acknowledge. I guess it kind of validates the work I've been putting in writing since the beginning of the year.
I joined this platform in January 2020, and wrote scarcely throughout the year, getting to 46 articles published and 146 subscribers by December 2020. Since January 2021, I already wrote 35 posts, have dozens more in my notes, and my following grew 38%, in just two and a half months.
When I started blogging, I made a decision that I knew would have consequences: I chose to write about what I like. This means my articles are split between different unrelated topics:
- 40% finance, be it crypto news or simple personal finance tips,
- 30% video and filmmaking, tips and tricks, cinema history or publishing my own work,
- 30% other things I'm passionate about: sports, space, travel, photography, and other random topics.
I didn't choose this split on purpose, I just did the math based on my posts of the last few months.
This is a writing choice I made because I enjoy the freedom this platform gives me regarding being able to write about any topic and share what I'm passionate about with the rest of the world. But, in a way, I know it's also not the greatest strategy to not be specialised in today's social networking life, where 99% of the accounts on the different platforms are focused on one thing. What I mean is, based on the split I just listed above, if someone follows me because of a Filmmaking 101 article I wrote, and they expect more cinema related content, they'd be potentially uninterested and disappointed by 70% of my content!
I chose freedom, and knew this could in turn make it difficult to build a following because of this lack of consistency. Unless of course I happen to find a bunch of people who like all the same things I do, and I guess that's kind of what I was going for.
But I made that choice because I don't care about millions of followers who wouldn't read my content, as long as the 200 I have today actually enjoy what I write. If I can teach you guys something, be it about how to improve your camera work, how to save more money each month, or how to survive on Mars, then I'm doing my job properly, and if you actually appreciate learning about all three of these things, then that's what I call a consistent following and a great community. I try to reply to every single comment I get, in order to strengthen this growing community.
My most profitable article so far, and the one I spend the most time working on, was the crypto debit card comparison I published last year, which got me more than $30 (at today's rates). Most of my posts earn me about $0.20 on average, but I already talked about how biased I think Publish0x is when you're not talking about crypto, so I won't go there again. But when I see comments from you guys saying what I shared helped you in some way, then it makes it all worth the time and work spent on writing. I just enjoy sharing tips and tricks that helped me in my life journey, in the hopes that they can help and impact other people's lives as well.
Anyway, this post was just a big thank you note to the Publish0x team for giving us such a great platform, and to all of you guys who have decided to follow me, whether it was because you liked what I said about crypto, personal finance, videography, or traveling. Your support and comments push me forward and motivate me to keep writing more and more about the topics I like. Thank you.
