Can there be nothing new?

Can there be nothing new?

Core Question

Can there ever be a point where nothing new can come? This means that it is already at its best, and anything would make it worse/require a lot of effort.

What we've been told

We've been told since we were young that you can always improve. Every chance and mistake is an opportunity to learn something new.

However, can there be a point where we can't really improve anything?

Is there?

The short answer is yes. We can reach a point where no matter what we try to do, whether in life, crypto, apps, or websites, we always seem to make it worse.

Why?

Well, as we advance and improve, we are constantly fixing and adding new things we didn't know before or were doing wrong. However, we can't infinitely be fixing something. There is a point where we have fixed everything, added everything without making it cluttered, and changed things. Welcome to the Law of Diminishing Return.

Essentially, the Law of Diminishing Return states that over time, you will generate less and less output. So, as you update an app, or a crypto network, you will have a lot of things to do when it launches, all requiring very low effort for large and visible gains. But as you optimize it, you start to need more effort for almost zero gains. You might need to spend 2 weeks pushing an update that only affects 0.0001% of users

This is also why everything like movies and book series always seem to get worse as you go on. There is simply not enough new content to introduce to you, as the majority was done in the first 1 or 2 books/movies.

How does this apply to crypto?

Take Solana for example. It has been reducing its transaction speed all the way from 400ms to 200ms. But you can only get as fast. It might continue to reduce its transaction speed (meaning faster blocks), but it can't continue infinitely. Sure it might reduce by a few milliseconds, then one millisecond, then microseconds, nanoseconds, becoming increasingly smaller that we see no benefit/change, but it requires a lot of work. This can also apply to changes to say features of a network and a lot of other things.

We can't make something infinitely better, or always be adding new features. Otherwise, it might be overwhelming, or simply less enjoyable.
