I am taking the scenic route to Spanish fluency. It took me several months to learn the difference in "horse" and "onion." The words are very similar. "Caballo" means horse and "cebolla" means onion. I have never actually tried to buy a horse at a vegetable shop, but I have come close.
I first learned the word "caballo" while booking The Poor Man's Nick Cave Tour in 2018. I discovered this song, and played it on a constant loop while looking for gigs in South America:
My cat loves the part of the video where the computerized horse is walking on a disembodied black field. He is mesmerized by it.
In the spirit of René Magritte's painting of a pipe titled This Is Not a Pipe, I thought I'd make a graphic of a horse with the caption, "I am not an onion." Not only for my own amusement, but also for sale through the merch page on my website, or RedBubble, whichever you prefer.
If you have a Spanish teacher in your life, or a student with a ridiculous bent, it might make an amusing gift.
Feliz Navidad amigos,
N
