Thanks to LiaRio ( Check out his blog, which is full of incredibly interesting articles https://www.publish0x.com/@liario ) for suggesting I write this article. I hope you enjoy it.
Today, we're accustomed to opening an app on our smartphones and, with a couple of taps, investing in a global ETF while paying close to zero commissions. It seems normal, but there was a time when investing was an exclusive club.
Building a well-diversified portfolio required enormous amounts of capital due to the extremely high brokerage fees. The only alternative for a small saver were mutual funds, which, however, required extremely high minimum deposits and were designed to enrich those who sold them, not those who invested in them.
If these barriers have fallen today, it's thanks to John C. "Jack" Bogle. He understood that the inaccessibility of the market was caused by Wall Street's insane costs. By inventing passive investing, he literally democratized access to wealth.
The Problem: The Illusion of Active Management
Before Bogle, the mantra of traditional finance was charging experts a fortune to beat the market. Banks sold actively managed funds, promising that their analysts would find winning stocks.
The price? Hefty commissions, often between 2% and 3% annually. But the math is unforgiving: between management costs and inflation, the real returns of active managers fail to beat their benchmark index over a 10- or 15-year horizon. A hefty entry fee was paid to get less than the market itself.
The Revolution: Vanguard and the Index Fund
In 1974, Bogle founded The Vanguard Group with a previously unseen structure: the company was owned by its own funds, which in turn belonged to investors. There were no outside shareholders to enrich, just one goal: reducing costs.
The real earthquake came two years later with the launch of the Vanguard 500 Index Fund, the first index fund for the general public. Instead of paying experts to predict stocks, it simply faithfully replicated the 500 companies in the S&P 500. Wall Street derided it, dubbing it "Bogle's Folly," accusing him of aiming for mediocrity, but compound interest has resoundingly proven him right over the years.
The Bogleheads' Philosophy
Bogle's legacy lives on today in a philosophy followed by millions of investors (the Bogleheads), based on three golden rules:
- "Buy the haystack": There's no point in trying to find the needle (the winning stock) at the risk of getting burned. By diversifying and buying the entire haystack, you eliminate the risk of any single company.
- Time, not timing: Time in the market beats timing the market.
No one has a crystal ball. The real strategy is to invest consistently and ignore short-term media hype (for example, DCA).
- Cost war: the TER (Total Expense Ratio) is the only thing under your control. The less you pay in commissions, the more capital is left working for you.
Legacy in today's world
The intuition of the index fund paved the way for modern ETFs. If today's financial education is based on global index savings plans, we owe it to Bogle's courage.
He demonstrated that, in investing, boredom and simplicity trump adrenaline. He gave power back to savers, wresting away from a system that profited from asymmetric information.
