How to Get Started With Phantom Wallet: A Beginner’s Guide to Setup, Funds and Fees

Phantom is one of the most popular wallets on Solana, and it is also one of the easiest to set up. If you want to get started with Phantom Wallet but are not sure where to begin, this guide walks through the whole path in order: where to download it, how to create a wallet, how to protect your recovery phrase, how to add funds, and how to make a first swap without surprises. Everything below comes from Phantom’s own help center and guides, which we read on October 25, 2026, plus a look at our own referral page.

What to Know Before You Get Started With Phantom Wallet

The most important fact comes first. Phantom is a self-custodial wallet, which means only you control access to your wallet and funds. Phantom’s help center says plainly that Phantom cannot access your funds or recover your wallet for you. That is the upside, because nobody can freeze your money, and it is also the responsibility, because nobody can rescue you if you lose your access.

Quick reference: the five steps

1. Download: from phantom.com only, as an iOS app, an Android app, or a browser extension.

2. Create: sign in with Google or Apple, or create a wallet with a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase.

3. Protect: write the phrase down offline and never share it, because Phantom Support will never ask for it.

4. Fund: deposit, buy crypto with Apple Pay or Google Pay, or receive tokens from another wallet or exchange.

5. Swap: check the fees and price impact before you confirm. Phantom lists a 0.85% fee on most swaps.

Step 1: Download Phantom From the Official Page

Phantom is free to download on iOS, Android, and as a browser extension, through phantom.com/download. Phantom’s own guidance warns that scammers sometimes upload fake apps that can steal your funds, so only use the official links. It also notes that Phantom does not run a Discord server, so be wary of anyone who claims otherwise or offers “support” in a direct message.

If you want the referral discount, start from the referral link instead of the plain download page. Our own link opens a page that says “Install Phantom today and get 10% off your fees”, shows the referral code, and notes that the code is auto-applied with the download link on that page.

Step 2: Create Your Wallet

Phantom offers two ways to create a new wallet. The first is to sign in with Google or Apple. You then set a four-digit PIN, which you use together with your email to restore the wallet on a new device. Phantom strongly recommends that you also export the 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase as an extra backup, and says you can find it under Settings, then Security and Privacy, then Show Recovery Phrase.

The second way is to create a wallet with a Secret Recovery Phrase, sometimes called a seed phrase. On the mobile app, per Phantom’s guide, the steps are these.

  1. Open the Phantom app, tap More Options on the welcome screen, then tap Create Recovery Phrase.
  2. Write down your recovery phrase and store it safely offline.
  3. Tap “OK, I Saved It” and confirm.
  4. Choose a Phantom username. You can optionally connect your X account to import one.
  5. Tap Continue. At this point you can optionally enter a referral code or pick top traders to follow.
  6. Optionally turn on device authentication, such as Face ID or a fingerprint, to unlock Phantom on that device.

On the browser extension, the path is Create a New Wallet, then Create a Recovery Phrase Wallet. You set a password of at least eight characters that includes a special character, a capital letter, and a number. That password only unlocks Phantom in that browser and does not replace your recovery phrase. You then save the phrase, choose a username, and click Get Started.

Step 3: Protect Your Recovery Phrase

Phantom says it does not store your recovery phrase and cannot recover it for you. The phrase is generated when the wallet is created and cannot be changed or replaced. Write it down and keep it offline, away from cloud notes, screenshots, and chat apps.

Phantom’s warnings are worth repeating. Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone, because anyone who has either one has full control of your wallet. Phantom Support will never ask for your recovery phrase or private key. If someone does, it is a scam, whatever name or logo they use.

Step 4: Add Funds to Your Wallet

On the mobile app, you add funds from the Home tab by tapping Deposit and choosing an option. Phantom notes that the Deposit button is rolling out gradually, so if you do not see it, update to the latest version of the app. The options it describes are as follows.

  • Cash: a separate Cash account that you can fund with Apple Pay, Google Pay, debit cards, bank accounts, or supported stablecoins. Its deposit address is different from your main wallet’s Solana address.
  • Buy Crypto: lets you buy eligible Solana tokens with Apple Pay or Google Pay, powered by Crossmint. The tokens go straight to your wallet, so you do not need to fund Cash first.
  • Receive Crypto: lets you receive tokens from another wallet or an exchange.

On the browser extension you can receive crypto, or buy tokens with a fiat payment through third-party providers. Phantom adds that feature availability varies by region, so what you see may differ from this list. Once the wallet is funded, you can buy and sell spot crypto, trade perpetual futures, or trade prediction markets. Cash can also be used for a virtual debit card and bank withdrawals, but Phantom lists those two as US features.

Step 5: Make Your First Swap and Know the Cost

A swap trades one token for another inside Phantom, and the app picks a same-network or cross-chain swap automatically depending on the tokens you choose. Per Phantom’s swap help page, you need a small amount of the network’s native token to pay network fees, although some Solana and EVM swaps may be gasless. Cross-chain swaps and swaps on Robinhood Chain may require at least $2 in value.

The costs are listed in a short table on the same page. The Phantom fee is 0.85% and applies to most swaps. Some flows do not carry it, such as deposits to your perps balance and swaps from USDC, USDT, USDG, or PYUSD into your Cash account. The network fee varies and may be sponsored if the swap is gasless, and on cross-chain swaps it includes the bridge provider’s charge.

Two more settings matter for a first trade. Slippage is how much worse a price you will accept, and Phantom says Auto is suitable for most swaps, adding that raising it allows a worse execution price. Price impact is how much your own trade moves the price, and it is usually higher for larger trades and less liquid tokens. Phantom shows both before you confirm, so read them each time.

How the Referral Link Fits In

The referral offer is separate from the steps above, and it is easy to set up if you start from the right page. According to Phantom’s referral landing page, the first three months of eligible trading fees come back at a rate of 10%, paid as rebates to your Phantom Cash balance. Phantom’s Referral Program Terms, last updated on August 19, 2026, say Phantom can change or end the program.

To see what that means in practice, take the 0.85% swap fee above. On a $1,000 swap, that fee is $8.50, and 10% of it would be $0.85 back, but only if the swap counts as an eligible trade. The terms we read do not list which trade types qualify, so treat this as an illustration and not a promise. We cover the details in our breakdown of Phantom’s referral program fine print, in our piece on whether any code gives a bigger discount, and in the full Phantom referral guide. If you also trade on pump.fun, see how the two referral offers fit together.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Most losses at the start come from a short list of avoidable errors, and each one maps to something Phantom itself warns about.

  • Downloading from the wrong place. Use phantom.com only, since fake apps exist.
  • Sharing the recovery phrase. Nobody legitimate will ask for it, including Phantom Support.
  • Skipping the backup. Phantom cannot recover a lost wallet, so write the phrase down before you add money.
  • Funding with more than you can lose. Start with a small amount and make one test swap before you trade larger sizes.
  • Ignoring fees and price impact. Read the numbers on the swap screen every time, especially for small, illiquid tokens.
