Tricholoma album - A hat, 30-100 mm in diameter, young bell-shaped, later squat, unfolded, with a broad, dull bulge; margin sharp, curved, often notched or folded. Matt, smooth, dry, radially fibrous surface; off-white, ivory, somewhat darker, leather-yellow in the middle.

Lamellae thin or coarse, dense but quite unevenly distributed, brittle; whitish, creamy, sometimes with darker spots.

Stem 50-120 mm high, 10-20 mm thick; cylindrical, club-shaped, narrowed at the base, full, hard; matt, whitish on the surface, sometimes with ocher patches. It is quite deeply rooted in the ground.

Hard, whitish flesh; wearing a meaty and brittle hat. Tart taste, later bitter-burning; sweet, earthy, farinaceous, rather unpleasant smell.

Occurrence: On the ground, in deciduous and mixed forests, usually on oaks, birches and beeches. Grows singly or in groups; from August to November. Quite common.

Value: Inedible mushroom, may cause gastrotoxic poisoning.
