Hello everyone! I'm back again to share my finds from another weekend walk through the woods of western Michigan, USA. This weekend was particularly humid and muggy, which made this walk quite the sweaty and mosquito-filled excursion. That being said, I was able to find plenty of beautiful fungi tucked away in the forest understory.
For this walk, I followed a small and winding tributary of the Grand River called Sand Creek. While there were many familiar species, such as the Frost's and Russel's Boletes with their intricately reticulated stems, I also came across a few that were brand new to my eye. More specifically, this was the first time that I have come across both the Cornflower Bolete (Gyroporus cyanescens), a shaggy-capped bolete that bruises blue instantaneously after being cut, as well as the Yellow-tipped Coral Fungus (Ramaria formosa), a salmon-pink species that looks as if it would be more at home in a tropical reef than the interior hardwood forests of North America.
Apart from my fungal friends, I also captured a few photos of insects and plants, including a beetle species known as the Forked Fungus Beetle on the underside of a mature Artist's Bracket (Ganoderma applanatum). Though I did not know it at the time, I later found that this prehistoric-looking species relies on wood-decaying species such as Ganoderma applanatum, Ganoderma tsugae, and Ganoderma lucidum for all stages of its life-cycle. Male and female members of this sexually dimorphic species can distinguished from one another based on the presence of horns on males that are used to compete for access to females.
As always, feel free to offer your suggestions if you believe that I have misidentified any of the species shown below!
