Ledger Valentine's Pack - Nano X Review

Fellow publish0X friends, we all know the importance of securing our crypto safely. I have been storing my cryptocurrencies in exchanges for most of the time like most new comers to this space. I am aware that this a very dangerous storing method as your private keys remain in the hands of the exchange. Hence, if they get hacked your crypto might get stolen (read on the Binance hack in 2019 or Bitfinex in 2016). I had long been contemplating on buying a hard wallet, so I finally made the move when I saw the offer Ledger had for 'valentine's day' (the prime example of our consumerism society, but that's off topic). Until the 17th of February, you can buy a Ledger Nano X and get a Nano S for FREE. This is amazing as you can use one, and keep the other as backup if you loose or brake the first one is broken. You can even get 20% off, by using a discount code (provided at the bottom of this article). So there is no reason to not secure your crypto.

A few information about Ledger Nano X:

  • State-of-the-art security Leave your fear of hacks behind: your private keys are stored in a certified secure chip, the same chip used in credit cards or passports.
  • Install up to 100 applications on your Ledger Nano X among our list of compatible apps, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Litecoin and many more.
  • Easy backup - Your accounts can be restored on any Ledger device, using a confidential 24-word recovery phrase.
  • Connect your Ledge to your smartphone using Bluetooth (only Nano X, not Nano S)
  • Use Ledger live to manage your crypto, 23 coins and 1250 ERC20 tokens. You can also stake coins (such as Tezos) directly in the Ledger Live app.

Here is a little review of the package I've got, just to show you what it all contains and how to set up your Nano X in Ledger Live (the GUI to use your Ledgers). By the way, I'm in no way affiliated to Ledger or have been paid to make this review.

Ledger Nano X and S

Here is what you receive (within 2 days in France, quite rapid for free shipping...), the Nano X and S nicely bundled together.

Nano X box content

In the Nano X box, you'll receive a USB-C cable to connect the ledger, some kind of key chain hanger, and some documents.

Nano S box content

It is the same for the Nano S, however the charger is a Micro-USB type B (and the key chain thingy is different, yes).

Stickers, recovery sheets and user info

Both Nano X and S come with 3x recovery sheet. The paper is nice and rigid so you can make sure to keep them in a safe place and never loose you seed phrase. You also have an explanation of how to use your ledger and some light stickers. All in all the content of the box is exactly what I expect from a hard wallet, with some free goodies that never harm.

Set up your Nano X in less than 30min

I was surprised by how simple it is to set up your hard wallet. Here are some guidelines on how to setup your ledger (Ledger Live will guide you step by step with annotated steps and questions throughout the setup):

1. Download Ledger Live (https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live) and install it on your machine. Once installed, open it.

2. You'll be able to choose between a few options (image below). If it's your first ledger, click on Initialise as new device

2.

3. Connect your Ledger device to your computer and select it on the Ledger live (in this case Nano X, but you can choose to set up the Nano S too).

3.

4. Choose your PIN. Ledger live will make sure that you follow the guidelines correctly and will ask you various question on the authenticity of your PIN, so that it's as secure as possible. You'll be able to choose, on your ledger, the PIN using the two buttons on each side. Everything happens on the ledger itself when setting it up.

4

5. The recovery phrase will show, word per word, on the ledger. Write it down on the recovery sheets provide in the box. Never write it on a computer or something hackable/online, keep it physical! You'll have to confirm your recovery phrase by inputing all 24 words in the right order in the ledger.

5

6. Security check list for you to check everything one last time and check if you Ledger device is genuine.

6

7. You can now decide to lock your Ledger Live app with a password, so that persons accessing your computer cannot see your portfolio. Lastly, Ledger live will also ask you what types of bugs and analytics you want to share with the Ledger company.

8. Your Ledger hard wallet is set! Simply navigate to your Manager and download the wallet for the currency you want to store. Once installed, you'll only have to create an account on the Ledger Live app, generating your unique address for your hard wallet.

I hope this little review was helpful for you and showed a bit more about the actual functioning the Ledger Nano X. If you are interested to get a bundle before the 17th of February, you can get 20% off (instead of 119€ you pay 95.20€) with this link or use this discount code: FRIEND-TD3BWT3

Set up your wallets safely and always do your own research before sending all your crypto to any wallet. This review is for informative purposes only so be careful when setting up a hard wallet, as you know your funds can be lost for ever if you loose your recovery phrase or don't set up your wallet correctly. Cheers!
