Anna (2019)

By wolverine | moviesandseriesreviews | 28 Nov 2020

This is movie is one of many I watched last year at the cinema. But my parents rarely go. And imprisoned the whole day at home with nothing to do. We prepare popcorn and watch movies.
This movie stars Sasha Luss as Anna, for me she is the least famous of all important actors in this movie. To be honest, I didn't know her before. Alongside her was Cillian Murphy as Leonard Miller, a CIA agent, Helen Mirren as Olga, head of recruiting for the KGB and Luke Evans as Alexander Tchankov, a KGB agent.
Anna had a difficult time growing up with her parents dying in a car accident, which led her to be on the streets until a guy comes and gets her out of there. At that time she's a teenager, addicted to booze and weed with her boyfriend who treats her badly. To get out of this shit hole she applies to the navy. One day she returns home and meets Alex who was intrigued by her profile and told her that they want to train her and promised her freedom in five years.
She succeeds in all of her training and starts working for the KGB. Her duty is to eliminate certain people. While in Paris, she gets interviewed by the CIA for an attempted kill. But they hadn't enough on her to catch her. She continued her work for the KGB until one day the CIA caught her in the act and offered her a way out if he works with them. Now, here where things get twisted and you might actually get lost. She's with the KGB but works with the CIA. Then the KGB knows and betrays the CIA. She's playing both sides to her advantage. And she made the right choices by manipulating everyone. She was even able to assassinate the head of the KGB with the help of Olga because she wanted his place. Everyone was looking at his own ambitions or motivation. The CIA and KGB were blinded by the hate of each other that Anna tricked them both. What was so irritating is that like every 10 minutes there is a shift in the timeline. One minute we are in 1995 the next 1992 then back months then forward time again to 1995. I think it was too much going back and forth. Another thing I noticed is that the action scenes weren't that much convincing, as if the actress Sasha was not built for this kind of thing. What really worked in this movie was the mind games and how everyone would approach a certain problem.
In the end, Anna was able to escape both CIA and KGB as neither showed promising signs of really giving her freedom so she took matters into her own hands. With the help of Olga, she went anonymous.
I know it's not a detailed review but I wrote everything worth writing about it. It's not a bad movie but also not superb. If it comes to, I don't think I'll watch again. Two times is enough.
