Since 2009 I have broadcasted over 84 mixes of my Monday-Mix. In this post I explain how I started to broadcast my mixes and what circumstances let me to choose Mondays to mix and broadcast.
Technical interests
At the end of 2009 I was experimenting a little bit with the Icecast-Streaming software at my home. For who don't know, Icecast is a free server software for streaming multimedia. My setup was on a virtual machine at home and everything worked sooner than expected. My first Monday-Mix #001 was only to test, if my Icecast-Server on my hardware can stream a whole mix. Suprisingly, everything went so smooth and I started to stream my mixes for my friends. After reaching about 10 simultaneous listeners, my broadband at home came to its limit and the streams became unstable. Luckily a friend of mine offered me a streaming server from his business and these limits have gone.

The neighborhood
I moved into a new home in 2009, a townhouse where I had two neighbors, left and right. As a DJ you almost always have a few problems with the neighbours. On the right side, with thick walls, lived an old lady. So no problem with louder music until late into the night. But on the left side there were only a thin wall and my neighbor was not so happy to listen to my sound. But.... one time my neighbor told me that he is not at home on Mondays... Klick!!! I got my slot to mix without disturbing my neighbor.
But what to mix on a Monday??
Pushy club music? Techno, Minimal, Tech-House? Not really on a Monday, or?
So I asked me the question "What's the sound of a Monday"? I came to the conclusion, its a bit melancholic but easy (to support the hangover from the weekend a little), it has to be more spacy and more dubby and it should be mixed with music that I want to listen and not to dance to. And I decided, that I also wanted to integrate my field recordings collection into the mixes.
Netlabels
Around 2010 I discovered the netlabel world and for me it was clear that I wanted to integrate this world into my mixes. I found it very exciting that the netlabel world was working with Creative Commons licenses. Free legal music! But I also discovered very quickly that this free music very often sounded different than commercial music. Since the commercial aspect was not the main focus, I found in the huge pool of Creative-Commons music very unusual creations and music pearls.

Conclusion
At the beginning I was a little bit unhappy with my Monday-Slot. But I soon realized how a great chance it is to mix on a Monday. The "Weekend-Mix" is practically always designed for parties, which is quite limiting in terms of mix and sound. On a Monday you don't have these limitations and I got to know a completely new mixing and also sound. Thanks a lot MONDAY!
