Chernobyl Tourism

It all started in a cafe in Italy I was drinking with some fellow students on the Italian course and we started talking about a film called Chernobyl. I decided to watch the film and decided that I really did want to go and see it for myself. I paid about €220 cash for the tour.

It did not take long to find a few companies who specialised in Extreme Tourism and they had tours of Chernobyl. The majority for just one day. I wanted to spend more time their so decided to book a 2 day tour with Chernobylwel.com.

When I arrived in Kiev protests were taking place little did I know that the government would be overthrown and that I would be part of the protest. I will save that for another post.
We were picked up in a very nice Mercedes minibus were we watched a documentary about the disaster. When we arrived at the exclusion zone I decided to take a picture of one of the guards he was not impressed and my guide told me to be very careful. We arrived at the state Hotel very very basic. But, Chernobyl had a small shop and a bar. Where we all got very drunk in the evening after the first day.

The tour had certain strict rules.
1. Long sleeves tops must be worn
2. No eating or drinking outside.
3. No entering the buildings
4. No exploring without a guide.
I broke all the rules except the first one. It was an absolutely amazing experience and I intend to go back someday.
I would highly recommend a tour of Chernobyl to anyone who wants a real adventure.
Please note all the pictures are my own.
