Saving as a daily habit: the power of small steps #48

By luciman | MindVest | 9 Sep 2025

Often, when we think about saving, it feels like something hard, requiring big sacrifices and strict discipline. But the truth is, saving doesn’t have to be painful – it can become a small, daily habit that you barely even notice.

Daily saving vs. monthly saving

I’ve met people who tried to save a large sum once a month, and inevitably, they couldn’t keep it up. On the other hand, when you set yourself a small daily amount – say, 2 or 3 euros – things change.
At the end of the month, 2 euros a day become 60 euros. And you haven’t felt any pressure at all.

A personal example

I remember when I first set the rule of putting aside the equivalent of a coffee every day. By the end of the year, I had saved almost 700 euros from this simple gesture. And I realised I hadn’t lost anything essential from my life.
In fact, that daily saving brought me more joy than the instant consumption.

The psychology of small steps

Our brain tends to resist big changes, but it easily accepts small ones. That’s why if you think, “I’ll save 300 euros this month,” you may feel anxiety or pressure.
But if you tell yourself, “Today I’ll just put aside 2 euros,” your mind perceives it as simple and doable. Repeated daily, this habit becomes part of who you are.

Create your own daily ritual

Daily saving isn’t just about money – it’s also a mental discipline exercise. You can turn it into a little ritual: in the morning, when you drink your coffee, transfer those 2 euros into your savings account. Or in the evening, before bed, put the money into a digital piggy bank.
This consistency creates a sense of progress and strengthens your confidence that you’re on the right path.

The power of accumulation

If 2 euros a day means 60 euros a month, then in a year it’s 720 euros. And if you invest that money, with an average return of 8% per year, in 10 years you’ll have over 10,000 euros.
All from a small, daily gesture.

Conclusion

Saving isn’t about large sums or severe restrictions. It’s about small, consistent habits that make a big difference over time. Instead of thinking about sacrifices, think about small daily steps that add up and change your financial future.
