Sand Worm Weekly Battle Challenge | Splinterlands #101

By mercurial9 | mercurial9 | 2 Jul 2021

This week's battle challenge focuses on the Sand Worm:

Huge Sand Worms have always lived in the desert of Draykh-Nahka, but with the recent uncovering of the various Untamed Prophecies, they have mysteriously grown even larger. They have also become more wild and free, somehow discovering how to escape from the Sands of the Dragon Splinter. Although it has never been witnessed, biologists believe that the Worms have learned how to swim. If they have indeed learned to burrow through water like sand, the Splinterlands will suffer greatly from their proliferation. In Mount Mox battle, Sand Worms can swallow monsters of nearly any size with no need to chew. They can even snatch fliers directly from the air, extending out of the ground even higher than the arena walls.

A reward edition common rarity monster from the Neutral Splinter at level 6:

  • Estimated cost: ~$20
  • Mana cost: 9
  • Melee damage: 6
  • Speed: 3
  • Health: 6
  • Sneak ability: Targets the last Monster on the enemy Team instead of the first Monster.
  • Snare ability: When attacking enemies with Flying, removes the Flying ability and cannot miss.

The Sand Worm is a famous fictional creature in Dune and Star Wars, and this popularity has carried over to splinterlands. Often appearing in the top usage stats amongst the top players for a variety of reasons: it packs a serious punch, can be used in the backline, decent speed, decent health, valuable abilities, and it's a Neutral monster that can be used in conjunction with other Splinters monsters. More importantly, it's a reward edition card and still in print, so if you are playing splinterlands daily, it's most likely that you will cross its path in your daily loot chests or seasonal loot chests. I was surprised by its cost; luckily, I acquired enough cards from playing splinterlands to level it up to level 6 without spending a cent.

Man, how mighty was the Sand Worm in this battle? He obliterated the opposition with 8 damage! (thank you to Daria + Inspire double up). The Sand Worm was the main monster doing damage and even in the process taking out my opposition Sand Worm. I was worried when I saw my opposition had a legendary Vigilator in its backline, but it was dealt with in due course, and my opponent had no answer to the amount of damage that my Sand Worm was doing.

Do you like the Sand Worm? Why or why not?

My main issue with the Sand Worm is that it's a bit squishy, but to be expected from a glass cannon type of monster. But I am not going to complain about how valuable addition it is to my lineup, and best of all, I got it for free by just completing my daily quests. How does it compare to other monsters? Well, it's in a league of its own. No other sneak monsters do more than 6 damage; therefore, it's understandable why the price is high for a common card.
