Cheaper alternatives to Lord Arianthus || Ep. #66 || Splinterlands

Did it ever happen to you? You're constructing a splinterlands deck and searching for cards. You see a card that looks right for your deck, and you're excited! It's an older reward card, you know, but it's just too sweet not to be included in your deck. You search for the card price and realise that it is too expensive!

This was my experience when I first discovered Lord Arianthus. I spent an entire month collating DEC and various rewards to have enough money to purchase it. In the end, I paid $35 to get a level 3 Lord Arianthus, which is relatively cheap, considering the prices today. However, it got me thinking for new players to splinterlands or players that don't want to invest - are there more affordable alternatives to Lord Arianthus? In this post, I would like to explore this question.

What makes Lord Arianthus a good tank?

A good tank must be hard to kill, and Lord Arianthus is a stubborn bastard to kill! It has high health and a great combination of abilities. To begin the search for potential alternatives, I will use the following combinations and look for cards that meet the criteria at the lowest level:

  • Health 5+, Shield and Void ability
  • Health 5+, Shield and Magic Reflect ability
  • Health 5+, Shield and Thorns ability

Health 5+, Shield and Void ability

Onyx is the cheapest alternative and almost a 1/3 of the price of Lord Arianthus.

Health 5+, Shield and Magic Reflect ability

Frozen Solider is the cheapest alternative and 1/11th of the price of Lord Arianthus.

Health 5+, Shield and Thorns ability

Naga Fire Wizard is the cheapest, but I wouldn't play it as a tank card, and therefore the next cheapest is Onyx Sentinel.

Based on the criteria mentioned above, costing $11.39 at level 5, the Onyx Sentinel is the cheapest alternative monster card to Lord Arianthus.
