I will keep this as short as possible. In fact, I have made this blog just to accommodate this post and others like it.
Ever wondered why languages like French, German and English use multiple letters to represent a single sound? Part of the reason for this is phenetic drift or the words being borrowed from foreign languages, but at its core I think it stems from the fact that the mentioned languages and many others use an alphabet. The same alphabet that I am using now in fact. This goes unquestioned from day to day, but think about why that is. There was no debate in Europe about which alphabet to start using when European languages first emerged over the course of the Middle Ages. It was obvious that they would use THE alphabet, the LATIN alphabet and there you have it, my brief thought of the day: the alphabet you use without questioning how it got there is simply (though nothing is truly simple, of course) the civilisation you belong to.*

And yes, Vietnam is more European than Russia, fight me.
