Located in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon in the Gard department in France, the "Fort Saint-André" was a medieval fortress dating from the first half of the 14th century. That fortress was commissioned in the late 13th century by Philip the Fair (the King of France), but only built in 1360 under John the Good. The fort Saint-André occupied a strategic position because it was located at the frontier with the Holy Roman Empire and near the papal residence in Avignon.

From the ramparts this fortress looks a bit like the Chinese wall :
