A Brief History Of Marketing

Marketing was introduced back in the twentieth century. It started out from the trading and exchange for goods with goods using a system called the Barter system. The trade was done directly during the earlier societies. As time went by, trade was done through an agreement by using money as a medium for the exchange of goods instead of the goods for goods.

Before the industrial revolution occurred, production of goods were produced in a small scale and was only targeted for local customers. Buyers were able to be in contact with the sellers directly which made it easier for the producers to know what their customers need and want. When the revolution happened, the production of goods became large scale and products are produced in larger units. Towns expanded and people depended on buying products more than producing their own. Producers began to expand their marketing target internationally instead of focusing only on the locals. Due to the distance between buyers and producers, producers will need to figure out what buyers want and desire.

With the mass production techniques, the number and types of goods have been increased on the market. The increase in productivity helps to reduce the unit costs. However, it became a problem when producers start to offer products with a cheaper price which led to high in demand. This made businesses to focus more on producing enough products in order to satisfy customer demands rather than what a customer actually needs.

Lately, production is not the main issue that businesses are concerned about. The problem is the excess supply rather than excess demand. Because of this, businesses began to focus on how to increase the demand rather than focusing on how to produce enough products. This is where marketing began to surface.

Mass marketing techniques were first applied to highly demanded consumer goods that are deemed to be necessities for customers such as toothpaste, food, washing powder and anything that everyone need for their daily life. Marketing methods were then applied to industrial goods and services afterwards. Having a good marketing technique became important as many businesses began to pop up and competition between businesses in the same market arose so it is really important for every business to adopt a marketing strategy to attract new customers or retain existing customers.
