In the past few days, Bitcoin (BTC) dominance has reached 53.68%, the highest level in the last three years, with a market capitalization of $1.27 trillion. This means that BTC has a dominant position in the cryptocurrency market, far surpassing Ethereum, which has a capitalization of $389 billion (15.9%) out of a total market of $2.43 trillion.
This result is unusual compared to previous market cycles, where altcoins usually performed better during bull markets. However, from the start of the bull market to the end of 2023, BTC has outperformed altcoins, with a few exceptions such as memecoins.
One of the main factors that have contributed to this situation is the influx of capital into the ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) markets, which has changed the dynamics of the market. In the past, profits made by institutional investors were often reinvested in altcoins, but this time that did not happen.
Furthermore, the growth in the market capitalization of stablecoins has had an impact, showing that the launch of spot ETH ETFs has not led to a significant increase in altcoin prices as expected.
Ethereum, in particular, has seen a disappointing performance despite the launch of its ETFs, with the price of ETH not benefiting from the entry of new institutional investors.
Despite this, there is still hope for altcoins. Ki Young Ju, CEO of CryptoQuant, suggests that the movements of whales (large investors) indicate a possible preparation for a new bullish rally in altcoins. This is supported by the “cumulative buy-sell volume difference,” which shows an increase in buy orders at increasingly higher prices, signaling growing investor interest.
