12 ways we humiliate ourselves at the gym (and call it cardio)

Nobody's watching. Except you, checking if anyone's watching.

I want to start by saying I love the gym. I love what it represents. Discipline, strength, becoming the kind of person who says things like "leg day" without irony. I have loved this idea of the gym for roughly eleven years now.

What I do not love is what actually happens once I'm inside the building, surrounded by mirrors and strangers and my own reflection catching me off guard at every conceivable angle like a haunted house of my own making.

Here's the thing nobody tells you before you get a membership. The gym isn't a place where you get fit. It's a place where you become a slightly deranged little animal who has convinced herself everyone else is also deranged, and that's why it works. We're all in on it. We just don't say it out loud.

So let's say it out loud. Here are twelve things every single person in that building has done, is currently doing, or will do the second the coast is clear.

1. Flexing in the mirror "to check form."
Sure. Form. That's exactly what's happening during that thirty-second bicep pose you just held like you were being knighted. Nobody's checking their tricep engagement for that long. You're just seeing if the pump did anything. It didn't. You still love it.

2. Choosing the treadmill based on which TV is playing something good.
Fitness goals, secondary. Not missing the end of a cooking show, primary. This is science, and I will not be taking questions.

3. Pretending to check your phone to catch your breath.
The universal signal of "I am not struggling, I am simply extremely popular and in demand." Meanwhile your texts say nothing, your lungs are on fire, and you've been standing still for ninety seconds staring at a blank screen like it holds the meaning of life.

4. Timing your set so the attractive person walks by mid-rep.
Suddenly your form is Olympic. Suddenly you're growling a little. You've never growled in your life. You will never growl again. But for those six seconds, you were an animal, and it felt incredible.

5. Wiping down the machine dramatically so people know you're considerate.
Three big showy swipes, visible from space, ensuring the entire gym floor bears witness to your cleanliness. Meanwhile you skipped your feet yesterday because they're "basically fine."

6. Grunting slightly louder than necessary.
A little audio branding. A tiny commercial for how hard you're working. The weight didn't require it. Your ego required it.

7. Avoiding eye contact in the locker room like it's a hostage situation.
We are all naked-adjacent in there and somehow more socially terrified than at a job interview. Everyone stares at their own locker with the intensity of someone defusing a bomb.

8. Doing an extra set because someone made eye contact with your rep count.
You were done. Your body said done. But then a stranger glanced over during rep eight of eight, and suddenly you're doing rep nine, ten, eleven, functioning purely on shame-powered adrenaline.

9. Pretending you meant to stretch there.
You just needed a break. You didn't want a break to look like a break, so now you're doing a hamstring stretch nobody asked for, holding it like a yoga instructor who definitely has her life together.

10. Checking yourself out in every reflective surface on the way to your car.
Windows, other cars, the little mirror by the vending machine. You just spent an hour destroying your body and somehow still need forty separate confirmations that you look fine walking to the parking lot.

11. Lying about how often you actually come.
"Oh, I'm here like four times a week." You are here one point eight times a week, and one of those times was to return a water bottle you left behind.

12. Convincing yourself the post-gym snack cancels out the entire workout.
The math has never once worked out in your favor here, and you know it, and you order the thing anyway with the confidence of someone who just broke even at the casino.

Here's the genuinely sweet part buried under all this nonsense though. Underneath every grunt and every fake stretch and every dramatic wipe-down, there's a room full of people showing up for themselves, even when it's awkward, even when the mirrors are unforgiving, even when a stranger's rep count somehow controls their whole personality for a minute.

We're all just trying to become slightly better versions of ourselves in a room full of other people also trying and also lying about how often they come.

My tricep engagement has never been better. My grip on the truth about rep counts, less so.
